Picture Book Wednesday: Knight Owl and Early Bird

Early Bird is super excited to meet Knight Owl. But Knight Owl is tired after keeping watch all night. Early Bird wants to talk so early that Knight Owl asks him to go away.

This is a cute story about friendship, opposites in people, and determination. The illustrations are rich with color.  This is a new favorite! 

Graphic Novel Review: The Secret Garden on 81st Street

 

Mary's parents are always working - so she rarely sees them. She spends her time playing video games and eating. But when her parents die, she's sent to live with an uncle she's never met. New York City is very different from California. And her Uncle doesn't believe in technology. 

Her uncle is grieving the loss of his husband and travels most of the time for work. Mary's sent out of the house to explore the city. Mary learns that the roof of the building used to be a beautiful garden. One day she finds the key. She believes the garden destroyed until a new friends shares that it's only sleeping.

Mary and her new friend Dickon work to restore the garden to it's former glory. They have the help from Colin who suffers from panic attacks and stays in his room most of the time. Mary is able to coax him out. But will their secret garden be discovered by Mary's uncle?

My Thoughts: I loved this book. I enjoy reading updated versions of classic stories. In this one - they've kept the original ideas but modernized everything. There is no part from India (which cuts out the racist moments of the original tale). The garden becomes a rooftop garden in New York City. The fresh air still plays a massive role as does gardening and getting dirty. The story centers on friendship and learning to care for other people - just the like original tale. A wonderful story that captures the essence and the best parts of the story - and the artwork is amazing!

Adult Review: NYPD Red 4

* Book 4 in the NYPD Red series *

A movie premiere in New York City goes south when the star actress becomes the murdered victim in a jewelry robbery. The diamond and emerald necklace created by the Bassett brothers from one of the world's top jewelry houses.

A series of robberies creates drama for hospitals as they can't trace the missing expensive equipment. They can't share the knowledge that the equipment is missing for fear of a distrust of hospitals, but neither can they afford the millions of dollars now gone.

Between the two cases, there's the personal drama. Kylie's husband has relapsed in his addictions. He's crating havoc of their personal life and his professional life. Meanwhile Zach's relationship with Cheryl is on the rocks because of the time spent helping Kylie find her husband and solving her problems.

With so many pieces in need of care, will the NYPD Red team ever catch a break?

My Thoughts: This book is back on top with the series and once again I'm a happy reader. Lots of action and plot twists move the book forward. Great banter adds a little humor to the book, breaking things up. It's hard not to read this one in just one sitting. 

As for the characters, I clearly enjoy the secondary characters much more. I loved the older con woman and her son. They were intriguing and entertaining. I love the waitress at the diner who always needs to talk some sense into Zach. I like Zach, expect when he makes terrible choices (all too often) about his personal relationships. I go back and forth on Kylie. I like that she's tough and feisty, but I hate how she treats her friends.

Mysterious Saturday Review: NYPD Red 3

* Book 3 in the NYPD Red series *

Detective Zach Jordan and Kylie MacDonald learn of a gruesome murder by decapitation. They believe the murder is sending a message to billionaire businessman Hunter Alden, Jr. - who's son may or may not be missing.

While attempting to help, they're told to leave the situation alone. Solving the murder means figuring out what happened that night .Was Tripp kidnapped? Was the witness right or was she a busybody who got the information wrong?

Can the two partners put aside their personal drama and solve the case?

My Thoughts: I devoured the first and the second book in this series - and while I liked this book, it was a little too similar to another James Patterson book (which I won't mention for fear of spoilers). 

Also while I do like the personal relationships, I think they've been played out enough in the series. I would like to move away from the Jordan/MacDonald possibility. 

So, what I liked: the action, the danger, and most importantly the plot twists. Just when I thought I'd figured out the puzzle, something else happened that left me with more questions. I love the fast pace of these books, perfect for vacation.

Mysterious Saturday Review: NYPD Red 2

* Book 2 in the NYPD Red series *

One early morning, Jordan's called to the scene of a merry go round in Central Park. His partner's late and he enlists the help of two undercover cops who found the body to secure the sight.

The dead woman's the 4th victim in a series of brutal murders. Because of her wealth and connections, NYPD Red catching this case. The maybe wants the case wrapped ASAP as the election's close.

Jordan and MacDonald must sort through the previous detectives' note to find a link. Why is something taking the law into their own hands? 

My Thoughts: I loved this book just as much as the first book in the series. It had all the action, drama, plot twists and turns, and personal issues for the two main characters. I like how the past came into play in the present with the murderers: bullies, rape, snap judgement, and power. The back stories made it interesting to see how they evolved. I felt bad for MacDonald dealing with her husband's addiction, but I'm glad that Jordan stepped in. A thoroughly entertaining read that kept me captivated and wanting the next book in the series.

Holiday Thursday Review: Winter Street

The Quinn's Christmas doesn't go as planned when Kelley and Mitzi's marriage collapses. It changes everything as everyone examines their relationships. Are they working? Do they need something more?  When everything starts to crumble, who will pick up the pieces? Can Christmas be saved?

My Thoughts: This isn't your typical Christmas romance book; it's more of a book that celebrates the season through reality. I like how it made me think of the relationships in my life (I even dreamed about big family gatherings). I liked how it takes place over just a few days leading up to Christmas and Christmas Day. While I like how everything took a deeper look at their relationships, I wish that this book ended on a different note. I hope there's a sequel coming, because I want to know how it all turns out. While I went into this book with the wrong perception, I really enjoyed it.

Side Note: When talking with a co-worker about this book, she mentioned that some of these characters have popped up on the author's previous works. I wish I had known that...

Review: Blind Spot for Boys

Shana's officially on a boy moratorium since the last one broke her heart. One weekend she's hoping to create one last picture for her photography portfolio. And she meets Quattro.

She keeps seeing this very cute boy wherever she goes - including her family's trip to Machu Picchu. Could the universe be trying to tell her something?

My Thoughts: I loved this book and tore through it. While it's a great romance; it's also so much more. It's about a family coming to terms with a life-changing situation where Shana's father learns that's going blind. It's about chasing your dreams and seeing the world. I loved the moments where Shana captures the world through her lens. I loved Grace and her determination to finish what she started. What an inspiration she was. I loved how both Shana and Quattro were broken hearted in the beginning of the story and how time changed their views. I really want to see the pictures Shana took. What an amazing journey.

Mysterious Saturday Review: NYPD Red

New York is hosting Hollywood week in hopes of bringing more of the business to the streets of New York. The mayor wants everything to run smoothly, but when a big time producers collapses at breakfast, it looks like murder.

NYPD Red takes the case. Detective Zach Jordan is on the case with his new partner (and the woman he's been in love with forever). Together, they determine that he was murdered with poison. He's not the only one on the killer's target list.

Soon the killer starts playing a cat and mouse game with the Detectives and it becomes personal. an Zach and Detective Kylie MacDonald take him down?

My Thoughts: I devoured this book on  plane ride. I loved the action, the danger, and the plot twists. I really liked both of the detectives. They were both strong and determined. I liked the banter between them.  I liked how the book centered around movies and TV - including the chapters written from the killer's perspective. A great entertaining and fast read that left me eagerly looking forward to the next book in the series.

Review: Unbreakable

 * first book in a new series *

My Thoughts: The tagline hooked me Supernatural meets The Da Vinci Code in this action-packed paranormal thriller. And it's right. The Supernatural jumped out at me within the first few pages and I was hooked. I loved watching Kennedy come to terms with her new life and figure out the Legion. I liked the ghost-hunting along the way and how the group came together to find the pieces of the weapon. I liked the action and the danger from the ghosts. I liked watching hte group uncover clues about where the next piece was hidden. I loved the brothers, although I felt bad for them. I hope they can solve their differences. I liked the romantic tension. I really liked Priest and his talent. I like Alara. I can't believe the ending, it left me wanting the next book immediately!

Adult Review: Irresistible Blueberry Bakeshop & Cafe

Ellen's grandmother just died - in her arms. Her last words asked a favor from Ellen. She wants Ellen to deliver a letter to man from her past. Of course, Ellen agrees.

Soon, she's making the trip up to Maine. An attorney from Manhattan, she's used to city life and a schedule. Things don't go according to plan--at all.

The first day she arrives, she falls off a dock while taking a picture. She's rescued by a man. Shaken, she kisses him in gratitude. Someone captures the moment on camera and it's the headline of the paper the next morning.

Ellen can't believe this is happening to her. She's getting married in three months.  The longer she stays in Maine, the longer she begins to look at the world differently. She never knew her grandmother painted. She never knew much about her past. Ellen's finding more and more out about her grandmother than she ever thought possible. And in the process, finding more and more out about herself.

My Thoughts: I admit that the cover and the title hooked me first. But that was before I opened the book. I devoured this book. I loved the country life in Maine and the differences in life. I loved the descriptions of food, the local pub, and the small town charm. I loved driving down the back roads with Ellen and slowly uncovering more details about her grandmother's life. A fantastic debut that left me wanting more by Mary Simses - and quick!

Cover Thoughts: Fantastic - although I just noticed the heart on the window and love it just a little bit more.

Review: This is What Happy Looks Like

When Ellie receives an email asking her to take a pet for a walk, she never dreams that it will change her life. Ellie responds because the thought of a dog waiting for a walk makes her sad. Graham returns the email, thanking her and explaining that he sent the email to the the wrong address, and oh by the way, he doesn't have a dog, he has a pet pig.

They start to have a relationship over emails. Graham is attempting to be a regular guy, only he doesn't live a normal life. He's a mega-star. Soon, he's off on location. shooting his latest movie. When the small town location falls through, he adamantly suggests a small town in Maine --the town where Ellie lives.

When they come face to face will everything blow up or will it be amazing?

My Thoughts: I LOVED this book. I tore through it in one sitting, I couldn't put it down. I loved the small town of Maine. I could picture myself there eating ice cream and hanging out by the water. I loved the relationship and how it grew between Ellie and Graham. I love the romance, but the whole book was fantastic. I loved the small town charm and how the town changed when a movie production company disturbed the natural flow of life. I liked the layers: Ellie's friendship drama with her best friend, Ellie trying to figure out her family life, Ellie trying to hide her life from the paparazzi. I didn't want this book to end, it was too good to let go of.

Review: Twilight Saga

My Thoughts: The Complete Film Archive is perfect for fans of the books and movies. The photos are amazing, many of them unique.  They cover the pages, making this a glossy book.  I enjoyed the photos of S. Meyer with the cast and director from the first movie. The archive ranges from color on the sets to character profiles to candid quotes about the film from the actors/actresses. The book looks at the filming of the movie - the sets, the challenges, the complications, and it shares some secrets.  
While it's a GREAT book for the in depth view of the Twilight saga, it's not a great book for libraries. It's similar to the  -ology books with little pieces inside as well as photos and papers glued to the pages. I hope that it lasts a few circulations in my library.

Review: Confessions of a Murder Suspect

1st in a new series
Comes out September 24th

Tandy is a genius, who strives to keep her emotions in check. She's awoken in the middle of the night by the police. They insist upon coming into her apartment stating that they're investigating a murder. Tandy has no idea what they're talking about.

She attempts to get her parents. They don't allow her to move. She's forced to open the door and remain there while they search the apartment. They discover her parent - both murdered.

Tandy and her brothers have no knowledge of the deaths. Due to their unique upbringing, they rarely show emotions. Thus no one bursts into tears or collapses or goes into shock like normal teens.

As the police watch carefully, they begin to suspect that someone in the locked apartment, which showed no signs of forced entry, killed Mr and Mrs. Angel. Tandy decides to solve their murders - after all her mind is the clearest. She's also sure not to rule out any suspects ---including herself.

My Thoughts: It took me a couple chapters to get into this book, but then I was sucked in completely. Tandy is an unreliable narrator. Usually I don't like it when narrators talk to the readers, but this one works. However, it's hard to like Tandy and her siblings. They're so cold and different, almost inhuman. 


Despite that, I kept turning the pages. I had to know who murdered the Angels. I had to know what was going to happen next to the siblings. They were loose cannons. Eventually, I did learn to care about them. In typical Patterson fashion, my emotions kept me turning the pages as I had to know what happened next. The short chapters and the action and threat of danger is a great combination. I'm very interested to see where this series will go. I found this book fascinating.

Mysterious Saturday Review: Private

Jack, a former military man, has nightmares about his past. There are things he can't remember, decisions he hoped he made correctly. Horrific phone calls each morning from someone force him to constantly relive the pieces of those moments - except when he's on the job.

Jack owns an investigation company, left to him by his father. His team investigates thoroughly, with the best equipment, and sometimes outside the law. Three cases are now the number one priority: an NFL scandal, a serial killer murdering young girls, and the murder of one of Jack's friends.

While Jack and his team investigate these cases, his personal life is a mess. Can he close these three major cases without causing himself any more pain?

My Thoughts: A good fast paced mystery with the classic short chapters, lots of action, and multiple perspectives that kept me turning the pages. Even though I didn't love him as a characters, I wanted to know Jack's secrets. He's intriguing enough to make me want to read more in this series.

A Snapshot of the Little Brown Fall Preview

Yesterday, I was lucky enough to be invited and to attend Little Brown and Company's fall book preview. It's always fabulous day. I loved talking with other librarians and book people. It's the BEST!

Libba Bray was the special guest star. She was there to chat about her upcoming book The Diviners. The book, set in the 1920s, is part of a four book set. It sounds amazing and I can't wait to read it.

It took her 4 years of research once she had the idea. She's always loved the 1920s and wanted to blend historical fiction with the supernatural (again).  Her idea came during a book tour in Germany during an election. People were fascinated with the election.  Issues kept coming up and she realized they paralleled the 1920s.  She found that Americans tend to forget out history. And voila! The book comes out in September.

She even sang for us...using action figures! It was magical! There's even a video so you can watch it too!!!

I learned about several books that I'm excited to read or re-read with the picture books!

Etiquette and Espionage: Sounds like a cross between Gallagher Girls and Grave Mercy plus...steampunk. The cover is GORGEOUS! It comes out February of 2013

Ten Tiny Toes: Looks VERY sweet. I adore the illustrations by Mark Brown. Here's one of the collages, which are amazing in person. I love the textures and the depth of them.  This one comes out September 2012

Iron Hearted Violet:  This middle grade looks super cute! It's about a princess who uncovers a secret library...and a magical book. She lets loose a magical being, who might want to destroy the world. This book had me at the cover - but also Princess and secret library!! October 2012 (The final cover will be a bit lighter)

Return to Me: One girl has her life all planned out. She graduates high school and during the summer in between high school and college - life happens. There's romance, family drama, and big decisions made. Sounds awesome! Out January 2013

Monster's Monster: This one sweet, playful, and funny! Out September 2012

Nighttime Ninja: Fun cover - the leaves are textured! A fun story with some spooky moments. Loved the end! Out September 2012

Review: The Last Princess

He's also the man who shoots her father in the middle of a ball.  She watches her father die seconds before fleeing the ballroom. Together her sister, the Queen, and brother attempt to escape the palace. Only Eliza makes it to freedom.

She's determined to save her family. Eliza joins her enemy's training camp where she spends her days training and spying.  She learns the location of the prison where her siblings spend their days.  Can she sneak into the Tower of London and rescue her family? What about the rest of her people? Can she help her people gain access to food and safety? Is her family and her country doomed?

My Thoughts: I really really liked this one. I loved the setting of futuristic England. I loved the royalty angle. I loved Eliza for her bravery and determination. She's strong and feisty. I really liked her best friend Polly - she was loyal, smart, and determined to help her friend. I liked Wesley - he's friendly, knowledgeable, and has family connections. It's a very emotional read - there's love and friendship, anger and hate, sadness and loss, and death and betrayal.  There were moments that I found simply unbelievable  - just a few, but it kept me from loving the book. Still, it's a great read and I think teens will gobble it up. I'm awaiting the sequel!

Christmas Review: Christmas Wedding

Gaby's husband died three years ago. This Christmas, she's decided that she's getting married.

None of her children have been home to celebrate Christmas since he died. This year she's using her wedding as an excuse to stop feeling sad about the holidays and to start smiling again.

She sends a video to her three children - all of whom are having issues of their own - telling them about her upcoming marriage. However, Gaby refuses to name the groom.

My Thoughts: This is the first James Patterson book that I've read that hasn't been action oriented. I couldn't put this book down. I kept turning the pages to uncover more secrets.

I liked the different perspectives. I loved not knowing the groom. I loved the wedding setting. All in all, it's a light heartwarming read, just perfect for the holidays.
