Christmas Movies (2)

Another week of festive movies:

From Netflix:
Ok, I've been excited about this movie for a year now. Basically since it was announced.
And it did not disappoint. I loved the cast - the sweet moments - and the funny moments. All about family, community, and sharing moments together.

I can't wait to see what she does next.

Add this one to your watch list!

From Hallmark:

A security threat places this MI7 agent undercover as a royal nanny.
It's funny, charming, and sweet. No stuffy royals here.
Lots of fun - add this one to your list!

8 stories intertwined with the Golden Dragon Restaurant at the heart of this story.
This one was sweet, charming, and all about going after your dreams. I loved the story line about the "perfect" Christmas - just like the ones from the movies.

I did love it, but I wanted a little more wrap up at the end.
Add this one to your list too!

Movie Review: My Mind and Me

I'm becoming a huge Selena fan. I really liked her Selena + Chef series.

So, I was excited to watch this documentary from Apple +

And it's very honest. Selena goes through ups and downs of emotions. It features six years - it covers concerts, charity events, and the pandemic. You get a glimpse into her life - and all the pressures she felt.

I just wanted to wrap her up in a hug and tell her that she's perfectly fine just the way she is. I can't imagine living a life in the spotlight and dealing with all that. I was impressed with the show and the depth of the it. I can understand why she can't go back and watch it. There's a lot of unpack here. I hope it helps more people talk about mental health and self care!

Nerd Blast: Haven Jacobs Saves the Planet

ASIN: B09RX41PKP
Publisher: Aladdin (September 27, 2022)
Publication date: September 27, 2022
Language: English

Praise for HAVEN JACOBS SAVES THE PLANET

"A powerful depiction of the impact of climate change on a young activist’s mental health." —Kirkus Reviews

Twelve-year-old Haven Jacobs can’t stop thinking about the climate crisis. In fact, her anxiety about the state of the planet is starting to interfere with her schoolwork, her friendships, even her sleep. She can’t stop wondering why grownups aren’t even trying to solve the earth’s problem—and if there’s anything meaningful that she, as a seventh grader, can contribute.

When Haven’s social studies teacher urges her to find a specific, manageable way to make a difference to the planet, Haven focuses on the annual science class project at the local Belmont River, where her class will take samples of the water to analyze. Students have been doing the project for years, and her older brother tells her that his favorite part was studying and catching frogs.

But when Haven and her classmates get to the river, there’s no sign of frogs or other wildlife—but there is ample evidence of pollution. The only thing that’s changed by the river is the opening of Gemba, the new factory where Haven’s dad works. It doesn’t take much investigation before Haven is convinced Gemba is behind the slow pollution of the river.

She’s determined to expose Gemba and force them to clean up their act. But when it becomes clear taking action might put her dad’s job—and some friendships—in jeopardy, Haven must decide how far she’s willing to go.

Picture Book Review: Witch Hazel

The seasons past as a girl and her grandmother tell stories and make memories.

I loved this - the granddaughter and her grandmother share stories. While the grandmother dies, it's dealt in an easy manner. The illustrations are delightful - ghosts of the stories come alive. The tagline is amazing - "The stories passed down from our loved ones become a part of us." I just love that. It's a great message that shines through this story and the illustrations. It makes me long for my grandparents again.

Blog Tour: Midnight at the Shelter

Lifelong Animal Love
by Nanci Turner Steveson

The English Countryside, 1960. I was 2 1/2 and fell into a small tributary from the Thames River. My dad waded in and pulled me out, then wrapped me in his sweater and turned the heat on in the car to warm me up. I didn’t cry, but I do remember being terribly upset that I had frightened the ducks we’d been feeding. That is the first time I remember feeling attached to an animal.

But my real, serious, all-consuming love affair with the animal kingdom happened in August of 1961 when I was three. My family went on vacation to Donegal, Ireland, and for the first time I rode a pony. I remember everything like it was yesterday   the color of the and the way his back swayed just enough for my brother and me to fit snuggly together. I remember that my sweater itched until I sat on the pony and suddenly the itch didn’t matter. I remember the sky was blue, the road was rocky, the hills were green and spilled down to sandy dunes by the ocean. I remember the scent of that sweaty pony, the hollow thud of his hooves on the path, and the way his mane felt like feathers twisted between my fingers. My brother was afraid, I was not. I was in heaven, exactly where I was meant to be, and from that moment on I was 100% horse-girl. And where there are horses, there are dogs and cats and an assortment of other animals and birds. Horse people are animal lovers, and my happiest place has always been when I was surrounded by them all.

I have had so many rescued dogs and cats and bunnies and chinchillas over my life, it is impossible to name them all, but every single one had a profound impact on me. There was a teeny calico kitten found on a freezing February day stuffed between two rocks in a stone wall. She fit in the palm of my hand and after I nursed her back to health, she went to live with my sister. Ashley only had Coconut a couple of years before my dad died and my mom moved into a senior living facility. Mom was lonely, so Coconut went to live with her. To say Coconut was spoiled is an understatement, but she kept my mom company and happy for the rest of her life.

And there was Quinn, an amazing cattle dog (who has a place in my book) who we rescued 24 hours before she was going to be euthanized. Clearly with a background in agility, we have no idea why she was dumped at a shelter, but she was a companion for my son after he had been in the hospital with a long, critical illness. I have no doubt that Quinn saved his life at least once. When Quinn went over the Rainbow Bridge, Tink, a golden retriever who had been abandoned when her family moved away (Holly in the book), and who I had taken in as a failed-foster, followed my son out the door of the vet clinic that day and has never left his side. She knew instinctively that he needed her more than I did, and she was right.

There was the older gentleman who was losing his wife to Alzheimer’s when their old dog, Lulu, died. He was crushed, and sure he would be alone forever. But in the oddest of coincidences, the very next day my vet got a call from a colleague in Texas who was trying to place a dog whose owner had just passed away. The little dog in Texas was the spitting image of Lulu. Even more profound was that the man who runs My Dog is My Copilot just happened to be flying to Texas that day to pick up some dogs from an overcrowded shelter and was able to meet up with the Texas vet and fly The New Lulu 1400 miles to the grieving man who held her in his arms within two days of his loss.

I experience these kinds of miracles and the love of animals all the time, which is why when the opportunity arose, I knew I had to speak for them. I had to tell their stories and write this book. I have captured only a fraction of what I could share, but I would truly love to hear from anyone about their own rescue story and how their beloved friends changed their lives. You can do this through my website on the contact page (with permission to post on my blog) at www.nanciturnersteveson.com. Can’t wait to hear from you!

About the Book

BuyGoodreads

Written with a distinctively doggy voice, great humor, and plenty of heart, this novel from acclaimed author Nanci Turner Steveson is a perfect pick for readers looking for a touching animal story in the vein of Because of Winn-Dixie or Marley & Me.

Rescue dog MahDi is happy helping his human partner, “MomDoc,” with the important work at her vet clinic and the local animal shelter. The two of them make a good team, caring for the town’s pets and matchmaking rescue animals with the families who need them.

When the shelter is suddenly down a staff member, the animals have to deal with a new caretaker: Huck, an unpleasant man who seems to have no problem threatening the animals he’s supposed to care for. As more dogs crowd into the shelter than are going to new homes, MahDi begins to worry that if MomDoc isn’t around, there is no telling what Huck might do.

With three perfectly good legs, the heart of a true leader, and his pack mates by his side, MahDi is willing to risk everything to save his shelter-friends from an uncertain future.

Praise:

"Each dog’s story illustrates one of the many ways dogs come to need new homes and how wonderful rescue animals can be."
Kirkus Reviews

"Alternating dogs’-eye views propel this immersive pack story from Steveson... Themes of love, hope, and belonging resound throughout, balancing the sometimes-dark content."
Publishers Weekly

Top Ten Tuesday: Aww Moments

This week's topic is aww moments - most of these come from the romance novels I read. The grand gestures, the near-death experiences, the moments when the hero or heroine realizes that they are in love. These are from books I've read this year.

The Duke helps make bonnets.
I love the family in this series!

The way the family all "meet" Jane

Basically this whole book was amazing

Review: Those Summer Nights

While it's no longer summer, I had to read this one!

Hannah had a rough year. Her parents shipped her off to boarding school after behavioral issues. Now she's back for the summer. She's allowed to return to high school this fall if she meets certain conditions.  She needs to find a summer job - luckily her younger brother has her covered.

She gets a job at an entertainment complex where she meets a cute boy and hides from her former BFF. It seems she might get off easy until the employee Olympics are announced.

And then her worlds collide. Hannah had hoped to make the Olympic soccer team until an accident ended her dream. In addition, the death of her beloved grandmother was too much for her to bear. She floundered, drowning in grief and not knowing who she was without soccer.

Now, she's trying to pick up the pieces of her life. She doesn't need this reminder, but according to the rules from her parents, she can't quit her job.
My Thoughts: I loved this one - for many reasons. I liked how we learned about Hannah's behavior over time. I liked her parents' rules and how she went about accomplishing them. I loved the entertainment complex. It sounds like a great place to work with fun co-workers. The Olympics were a great addition. I loved Hannah's brother and his best friend Ethan. I liked the bowling moments. I loved the older ladies in the bowling alley. They made me laugh. There's so much packed into this book - lots of layers and lots of feelings.

Cover Thoughts: Fun

Library Recommendation: Highly recommended for your romance collection.

Movie Review: Enola Holmes 2

Enola Holmes 2 from Netflix

Enola's second case takes the forefront of this movie. A young girl comes to her looking for help - her sister is missing. They worked together in the match factory. Her sister wouldn't just disappear without word. She supposedly stole something from the factory. Enola's determined to find Bessie's sister.

Her case connects with Sherlock's case. He's having a hard time solving it. Until he has a conversation with his sister.

My Thoughts: While this isn't based on one of the novels - it's a great movie. It's based on the historical strike at the match factory. I loved the moments between the Holmes siblings. I loved seeing old familiar faces -  Teweksbury (And that dance scene), Edith, and Enola's mother. I really hope they make more of these movies. They are smart, feminist, and so much fun!

Christmas Movies (1)

I've started watching Hallmark movies - here are some thoughts.

Noel Next Door:
Grumpy Neighbor who doesn't celebrate Christmas
Single Mom
The two meet without realizing they live in the same community.
A little You've Got Mail Twist.

Cute movie- worth a watch.

We Wish You a Married Christmas

Married Couple Struggling
Sent on a retreat for the holidays
Break up several times
Cute secondary romance
Loved the gay couple running the hotel

I thought this was going to be funny - and there were some funny moments, but it was mostly sad. Until the end. It was fine, but a little too sad for me.

Jolly Good Christmas

A man new to London meets a personal shopper while purchasing a gift card for his newish girlfriend. She gives him grief. Through a series of meetings, he begins to doubt his gift choice. But it's soon clear he knows nothing about his girlfriend. And asks for her help.

This was charming. And the scenery great. Watch this one!

Lights, Camera, Christmas!

A Hallmark movie is filming in her hometown - with a major star attached.
She's not a fan of them - and hasn't seen his movies, but her mom loves them.
She knows fashion - and gets pulled into the movie as the costume designer.
Lots of banter, family moments, and behind the scenes of filming of movie. And a great secondary romance.

This one was my favorite so far - highly recommended.

Have you seen any of these? Or can you recommend other good ones?

Graphic Novel Review: Babymouse

Babymouse has always been insecure of her curly whiskers. If only they were straight. Life would be so much better. After a dream, she discovered what it would really be like...

My Thoughts: I'm a huge fan of Babymouse - I'm so happy she's back in graphic novel form. I'm really hoping that it causes readers to discover her earlier books. It's great to see so many old friends - from the locker to Babymouse's friends, and even her enemies. I loved the message in this book - that everyone has insecurities about their body - but only you really fixate on them. This is a book about friendship, body image, and surviving school. It's funny and thoughtful. Plus, the art is super cute. Can't wait for more Babymouse adventures!

Five Things (4): The Final Gambit

I loved this series! And I'm glad there's one more book coming. I also can't wait to see what Jennifer Lynn Barnes writes next.  I don't want to talk too much about this one because...spoilers.

So here are five things I loved about it (not to mention that ending!)

Picture Book Wednesday: Farmhouse

The story of a farmhouse that housed a family of twelve children and their adventures.

I loved this book - for the stories of the children. While the story is charming, this is a book you pour over, looking at all the details. And there are many details - from the charming wallpaper to the measuring marks to the attic bedrooms. I did enjoy the author's note at the back.

Library Recommendation: A must have picture book for your library's collection.
Cover Thoughts: I love the raised windows on the cover.
