Movie Review: Young Woman and the Sea

 

This week, I watched Young Woman and the Sea on Disney+ and it was amazing.

This movie grabbed me right from the start. 

It features Daisy Ridley as Gertrude Ederle. After several women from their neighborhood died during when a ferry caught on fire because they couldn't swim, Trudy's mother decided that her daughters would learn how to swim.

Trudy loved it. From the start, her determination propelled her forward. She wanted to earn a free hot dog. Her mother found a coach for her and her sisters. Trudy didn't have the skill set, but she practiced and shocked everyone during her first race.

Trudy wanted more from life. She didn't want to get married and work in her father's butcher shop. She had bigger dreams. 

But when those dreams turned into disappointment, she had to find a new dream.

My Thoughts:

I loved this movie.

It made me tear up several times. Good sports movies always do TBH.

I loved the relationship between Trudy and her sister Meg.

I loved Trudy's mother - she was determined to help her daughters.

I really enjoyed Trudy's childhood coach.

I loved the radio moments - everyone gathered around the radio and the whole neighborhood listening. 

There were some tense moments in this one. 

It also made me angry at the injustice of it all. 

It did not make me want to swim though! 

I highly recommend this movie.

Movie Review: Enola Holmes 2

Enola Holmes 2 from Netflix

Enola's second case takes the forefront of this movie. A young girl comes to her looking for help - her sister is missing. They worked together in the match factory. Her sister wouldn't just disappear without word. She supposedly stole something from the factory. Enola's determined to find Bessie's sister. 

Her case connects with Sherlock's case. He's having a hard time solving it. Until he has a conversation with his sister.

My Thoughts: While this isn't based on one of the novels - it's a great movie. It's based on the historical strike at the match factory. I loved the moments between the Holmes siblings. I loved seeing old familiar faces -  Teweksbury (And that dance scene), Edith, and Enola's mother. I really hope they make more of these movies. They are smart, feminist, and so much fun!

Movie Review: Gray Man

Last weekend, I watched The Gray Man -  I did read the book last year. 

Here were my thoughts on the book. 

My Thoughts: I did like the movie. It was exactly what I expected. I remembered moments from the book. And there were some I did not. I did not remember Dani's character at all. Chris Evans plays a really good bad guy (and a really good Good guy). I wish that Regé-Jean Page had more of a role. Lots of action and danger. It did remind me of Bourne at times. 

I hope they continue with the series. It does sound like there are additional movies in the works.

Movie Review: The Hate You Give

I loved this book.

I was so happy to finally watching the movie.

It was a great movie. 

Of course there were differences; but overall, it captured the feel of the book.

It gave me all the feels! It was heartbreaking and sad, powerful and hopeful, and everything in between. 

They left out of favorite line from the book - you know the horror movie one.

Did Angie Thomas have a cameo? Because I kept looking for her and never saw her. Did I miss it?

But overall the was amazingly good and I was reminded all over again how much I loved this book.

Monday Matinee: Love, Rosie

Alex and Rosie have been best friends for ages -and at one time or another, both of them have thought of something more. But at the time something happened - everything goes wrong. Their relationship goes down a spiral.

Half truths and miscommunication make their relationship always one step out of reach. Could they really be made for each other or just best friends for life?

Based off a book by Cecelia Ahern (same title) that  I read years ago and Loved. Since it was years ago, I don't remember all the details except for the main story - but the movie seemed to follow along pretty well.

Lily Collins as Rosie was fantastic - I really liked her in this role.

It look me ages to figure out Sam Claflin (I confess I had to resort to IMDB) because he looked so familiar. He did a great job too.

I love how they were friends for so long. This movie made me smile, laugh, and shed a few tears. Well worth watching.
