Gemma and her BFF Addison meet two boys at camp. They're working on their majorette skills while the boys practice football. One boy is the quarterback and the other the team's kicker who never misses.
Gemma likes Max and it appears that he likes her too. She doesn't understand why he'd ask out her best friend instead of her. The more time she spends with him, the more she likes him.
She hopes he'll notice her as something more than a friend, but she doesn't want to betray her best friend. Is there a way for both of them to win?
My Thoughts: I really love Jennifer Echols, but this isn't my favorite book of hers. I couldn't stop reading because I wanted to find out what happened.
The friendships of the book bothered me. I hated Addison. She was horrible. I wasn't fond of Gemma at times either. Together they don't mix well. I know these relationships do exist - but it was hard to read about them.
I hated Carter. I hated the relationship between Carter and Max.
I
liked Max - he was quirky and amusing. He said random things that got
him into trouble. I really liked the conversations between Max and Gemma.
Books with cheating partners isn't for me - I have a hard time forgiving
the characters even if they're cheating with the one they're meant to
be with. By cheating I mean falling for your best friend's guy.
Ultimately I did like it, but it was hard getting past a few issues. I know that teens will gobble this book up.
Cover Thoughts: LOVE it! I really like the heart in the O too - a nice touch. Although the model is Asian and it's a big part of the book.

Review: The Darlings in Love
*sequel to The Darlings Are Forever*
Natalya is afraid she messed things up with Colin for good - until she gets a text from him saying he saw her in the park. After much consideration she responds. The two begin playing chess again. Natalya isn't sure if she's reading too much into his behavior, but she knows her feelings for him haven't changed. Could he be hiding something from her?
Jane's been convinced to act in a student directed performance - that Mark's directing. The subject matter woos her and she starts considering his offer. Her co-star wins her over. Before long, Jane can't wait to run lines with Simon. Could he be her first boyfriend?
Victoria can't believe that she's dating Jack. He's the perfect boyfriend. She loves the time they spend together - just the two of them. However, they hang out with his music friends quite a bit. Soon Victoria's realizing that they don't have anything in common. Can they still make their relationship work?
My Thoughts: I really like the friendship between these three girls. It's strong enough for them to tell the truth about their romantic relationships. It's strong enough to cover for each other when they're sneaking out with their boyfriends. It's strong enough to support each other when boys break their hearts. It's strong enough for them to just have each other. While this book tackles mostly romantic entanglements, I think the real relationship of this book is their friendship. I do hope there's more adventures for the Darlings.
Cover Thoughts: I really liked the cover for the first Darling book. This just seems generic to me. It's cute and all - but kind of boring

Adult Review: The Viscount Who Loved Me
*second book in the series - read the review for the first - The Duke and I *
Anthony Bridgerton's decided it's time to get married. He will find a bride this season. His brothers tell him Edwina Sheffield is the catch of the season. He sets out to woo her and win her hand.
However, she's already acknowledged publicly that her older half-sister will have to approve of any man she marries.
Kate Sheffield does not deem Anthony Bridgerton an appropriate match. She and Edwina have one season to make their mark on society and marry well. Kate knows that Edwina has the best chance at marriage. While they're only half sisters, she adores Edwina. She's certainly not going to allow her sister to marry a rake like Anthony Bridgerton.
Anthony adores a challenge. Soon he's sparring with Kate and courting Edwina. Edwina doesn't make his blood race, but that's exactly the kind of wife he desires - one he feels affection towards but doesn't love. Why then does he keeping dreaming about Kate?
My Thoughts: I LOVED this book. I love the Bridgerton family. I love their tight bonds and their easy banter. I loved Kate's quick wit and her love for her sister. I loved the mallet game. I loved the verbal matches between Kate and Anthony. I can't say anything about this book without gushing over it. A humorous romance that made my heart smile. A perfect book for Valentine's Day or any other day.

Sunday Matinee: Real Steel
I showed this movie at the library earlier this week and it was pretty popular.
Usually I don't like boxing movies because I hate the blood and guts = however, this worked out well for me because there wasn't blood and guts. I didn't hide my eyes during the hits.
What I liked:
Hugh Jackman - I really like him. He's dreamy. I liked his character here - and how it changed. He made me laugh. I liked this boxing sequence
Evangeline Lilly - She was good although her part was small
Dakota Goyo - his son who plays a smart mouth kid. He had some great lines. I loved him dancing with Atom. He also had some horrible lines.
Overall opinion:
It was a cheesy action movie. I happen to like cheesy action movies, but there were times when I rolled my eyes at some of the lines (especially a moment at the end). Still I enjoyed the movie and I those who came to the library to watch it did too!

I loved Zannah's grandmother - she has the same feisty spirit as her granddaughter. I loved seeing Will again. I really enjoyed Adele's sweet and sassy nature. I loved how she undertook searching for clues herself. I'm a big fan of this series and I can't wait to read more of Zanna's adventures. It's the perfect tween mystery series.

Adult Review: The Next Always
Three brothers and their mother have purchased an historic building which they are in the middle of refurbishing. They want everything to be perfect for the grand opening of the new Inn.
The architect and eldest brother Beckett Montgomery lives and breathes work. He's a work-a-holic but treasures the time he has stopping to the town bookstore. Beckett's always happy to see Claire - the one that got away in high school.
She's now a widow with three young boys. She tries to manage everything on her own, but as Beckett comes to her rescue a few times she gradually begins to open up and allow herself to relax.
Could there be a new addition to the Montgomery family?
My Thoughts: The first book in a new trilogy was charming. I loved the descriptions of the inn - from the building to the decorating. I loved the moments in the bookstore. I loved Beckett hanging out with the boys and their conversations. I liked the idea of the ghost in the inn, I thought that was an interesting touch. I hated the issues Claire had to deal with and how scary her life became. I loved the banter between the brothers and their bond. I think this is my first Nora Roberts book and I'm sure it won't be my last. I'm anxiously awaiting book 2 - The Last Boyfriend coming out in May.

Trailer Thursdays:
Bourne Legacy: I adore the Bourne movies - I'm hoping that even though this one is going in a new direction that it's half as good as the trilogy. In watching the trailer - it does look good.
Avengers: I love how this is coming out just in time for Free Comic Book Day (that's the first Saturday in May). I've watched the 2 Iron Man movies, Thor, and Captain America. I'm really looking forward to them all coming together.
Thoughts? What movies are you looking forward to watching?

Adult Review: The Duke and I
Violet Bridgerton is one of the society mothers that single men fear. She has eight children and she's determined to see them all marry.
Her oldest daughter Daphne wants to marry. But after two seasons, she's tired of hearing her mother talk about eligible men. When she does marry, she wants to respect and like her husband. She couldn't live with the four men who have already asked for her hand.
Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings, has returned to England upon the death of his father. Unfortunately for him, he's inherited his father's title and gained significance in society's eyes. Everyone wants to meet him. Every mother wants her daughter to marry him. Simon hates the limelight and he's not interested in marriage - ever!
Daphne and Simon meet at a ball, quite improperly. After waltzing together, they come to an understanding. The agree to a pretend courtship which will allow them to gain relief from mothers.
Could something actually develop between them?
My Thoughts: I love the Bridgerton family. I love their banter and their wit. I laughed several times while reading. I love the elusive Lady Whistledown who pens a gossip column about those in society. I adored Daphne and Simon. I devoured this book and quickly moved on to book 2. A perfect Regency romance!
Cover Thoughts: Cute
Source: I purchased this on a recommendation from a blogger I met while standing in line at BEA to meet Julia Quinn. She said it was an amazing series and she was right.

What's on my Hold's List
My Librarian friend Jess from I Read to Relax came up with a great idea. It's to highlight the books on hold at the library. I usually have 20-40 items checked out at the library and another 20 items on hold.
Here's a look at what I'm waiting to read:
I'm a HUGE Sophie Kinsella Fan - although I'm not a huge fan of this cover...
I read about this in PW and the title grabbed me! Plus doesn't the boy on the cover look a little bit like Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory?
I Adore Maria V. Snyder. I've been waiting for ages to read this one! I think I'm next on the list
Who doesn't want to read more about Downton Abbey? I'm ADDICTED to the show. Can't wait to discover more about the filming locations and the time period.
I'm a HUGE fan of Lisa Kleypas. I was so happy when I heard she was revisiting Friday Harbor in a brand new series. Did you know that at the end of the month, Lisa will be chatting live on Goodreads? Check out the details here.

Author Interview: Abby McDonald
I just finished the awesome Getting Over Garrett Delaney. You can check out my review here. Luckily Abby agreed to join us for an interview today!
Thanks Abby and Welcome to YA Book Nerd!
What made you choose to write YA?
What made you choose to write YA?
I started out in adult contemp (aka, ‘chick-lit’), but YA
had always been such a huge part of my life that making the transition seemed
natural. As a tween and teen, I devoured all the old-school juvenile books:
Sweet Valley, BSC, Caroline B. Cooney, even those old Sweet Dreams teen
romances (remember, with the stock photography on the cover and teen
DJ-slash-equestrienne-slash-tennis player plot-lines? Loved them!). Ultimately,
my adult books are really just coming of age stories too, albeit with older
characters and more ‘adult’ moments. I feel like discovering your identity is
as important and relatable a plotline at twenty-seven as it is as seventeen.
I LOVED those books too and devoured them in my teens years.
Where do you write best?
I’m a coffee-shop writer, and I’ve built up a rotating
stable of hang-outs here in LA so I don’t go too stir-crazy staring at the same
walls all week. Still, I’m still hunting for my platonic ideal: the perfect mix
of comfy couches, light, great baked goods, decent music and welcoming
baristas. It eludes me!
How do you get your ideas? Do you use real events in your novels and if
so, can you describe one?
I draw a lot on personal experience for my writing, I think
it’s the best way to ground characters in relatable moments and have real
moments of emotional connection with readers. For GETTING OVER GARRETT DELANEY,
I based a lot of the Sadie/Garrett dynamic on an unrequited crush I had when I
was sixteen – amplified for dramatic effect, of course! It seems to have really
struck a chord: I have so many people saying how they went through the exact
same thing.
I’m either terrible or brilliant with my titles – there’s
nothing in between. If I don’t know the title even before I start writing, I
never will, and have to delegate to my marvelous agent and editor. GETTING OVER
GARRETT DELANEY was easy – in fact, I named Garrett because I needed a ‘G’ name
to match the ‘getting over’ part!
Can you tell us a little bit about
Garrett Delaney? Would you ever date a guy like him?
Oh boy, not anymore! I feel like Garrett is the boy you can
only adore when you haven’t quite figured out who you are yet. His intellect
and obscure taste seem impressive, exotic even, compared to all the boring boys
your own age, and the fact this older, cooler boy values your opinion…? It’s
catnip for crushes, I swear. But, when you get older, you start figuring out
that maybe his rants about ‘trashy rom-coms’ are kind of elitist, and all those
philosophical musings are… pretentious? Self-important? All of the above.
I feel like a Garrett crush is like chicken-pox: you get it
once, and then you’re immune.
You used to work in the music and
entertainment industry. Do you have any funny stories from that job that you
can share with us?
Oh man…. I found some of my old Dictaphone tapes from my
music writing years recently. Hint: never, ever, listen to yourself on tape.
There’s twenty whole minutes of me giggling and stuttering away like a crazy
girl during my first ever big interview – with Maroon 5, back when I was
twenty. I thought I was being so cool and collected during the session,
(because sure, I’d hung out backstage with major rock bands, plying me with
champagne before. All the time!), but listening to it back… Oy! Aside from
that, the weirdest interview I ever did was with Marilyn Manson, who had just
split with Dita von Tees, and was adamant that his personal life was off the
table. OK then. Except he then launched into a thirty minute monologue about
why the relationship broke down, and how he just wanted a love he’d drive off a
cliff for. Because True Romance is such a healthy model for relationships. Let
me tell you, transcribing that interview nearly broke me!
I get that way with authors!
I get that way with authors!
What did you do on your release
day?
What I always do: go to B&N, take photos, sign books,
and then lurk to see if anyone picks it up. In a non-creepy way, of course.
It’s actually an adult title: The School of Essential
Ingredients by Erica Bauermeister. It’s a gorgeous story of cookery, life, and
loss, and she has such a wonderful voice. For YA, there are a couple of books I
WANT to read that I’m trying to beg/borrow/steal the ARCs to: Struck, by
Jennifer Bosworth, and Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo.
Do you have a fictional crush?
I think it has to be Matteo Sandoval from Love Walked
In/Belong to Me by Marisa de los Santos.
Do you have a favorite library
experience?
Since I was such a book-worm kid (or, as my library file
termed me, a ‘high-frequency user’) I was in my local branch ALL THE TIME. It
was pretty much the proudest moment of my life when my mom got to go in to
reserve a book that I had written.
Awesome! I love that idea :)
Are there any authors you’d love
to meet?
Caroline B. Cooney, who is one of my biggest inspirations. I
still have the reply she sent to my thirteen-year old self’s fan letter.
Oh, that's sweet!
Oh, that's sweet!
Do you have a favorite literary quote?
Not an over-arching philosophy, but writing Garrett’s
tedious love of all things authentic in GETTING OVER GARRETT DELANEY, I
couldn’t help but be reminded of a line from Emma Forrest’s wonderful
Namedropper: “I don't see what's so good about being genuine. Clog
dancing is genuine. Isn't being fake more of an achievement” It’s what I’d like to say to all those
people banging on about authenticity – in music, art, etc. I’m all about
genuine emotion, but there’s something to be said for well-crafted artifice
too.

Review: Getting Over Garrett Delaney
Sadie's in love with her best friend Garrett - and has been since they met two years ago. Now she's facing the idea of summer without him. It was supposed to be the summer he fell in love with her while they were at writing camp. Instead, she was rejected from the camp.
She bullies her way into a job at her favorite coffeehouse. After a complete meltdown after answering one of Garrett's phone calls, she realizes that things have to change.
Sadie comes up with a plan to get over him for good. She's starts by purging her life of items from their past. She eventually discovers that she needs to find herself
My Thoughts: I really loved this book.
I hated Garrett. He was so annoying in the beginning and horrible when he came back from camp. I wanted to smack him.
The strong connections with the characters (either good or bad) really make the book come alive. I feel like I'm in the story, rooting for Sadie (especially when she's on the floor of the coffeehouse after her mini-meltdown.) Those connections are what makes reading for me.
I loved the coffeehouse and the employees there. I loved how Sadie reconnected with Kayla. I love how she explored fashion, pop culture fads, current movies, and sporting events to uncover her true feelings.
Cover Thoughts: I LOVE it. I love the book over her face and the general frustration/agony felt.
Source: Netgalley
Random Thought: I think the cover looks like a Sarah Dessen novel and I think it's a perfect book to hand readers who love Sarah Dessen. It reminded me SO much of Truth About Forever (which is my favorite SD book)
