Mysterious Saturday Review: Caught Bread Handed

 * Book 4 in the Bakeshop Mystery Series * 

Drama comes to Ashland - in the form of Jules's husband and in a new restaurant. Jules isn't sure what to do about her relationship. Should she forgive Carlos? Should they be reunited? She loves seeing him in her hometown, but is that enough?

The new restaurant in town is making everyone miserable. A fast food joint shouldn't be part of the community, especially without blending into the Shakespeare theme. When the owner is found dead - suspicions arise on the angry business owners.

Jules walked in after the murder. With so many people angry at the victim, it's going to hard looking for just one person who committed the crime.  

My  Thoughts: I really love this series - I love the town, the people, and the bakeshop. I love how Jules is torn between Carlos and the town and what direction her life will take. I love the new ideas for the bakeshop, especially for the chocolate festival (which means I can't wait to read the next book). With all the food describe, this book makes my mouth water. I admit that I enjoyed learning more about Carlos. I'm starting to warm up to him a bit more. A fantastic addition to the series.

Mysterious Saturday Review: Premonition of Murder

 * Book 3 in the Dream Club Mystery series *

When Taylor and Ali are invited to lunch at the famous Beaux Reeves mansion, they couldn't be happier. Unfortunately, they're only shown the outside of the house. It's reclusive heiress wants to pick their brains.

She's had a premonition of her death. The sister reassure her that dream interpretation can take on many forms. Relief eases the heiress's mind.

However, her dream becomes reality. Ali and Taylor are heartbroken and determined to discover the culprit. Could this death be connected to the past?

My Thoughts: I really love this series - for the Southern mentions, the candy shop, the sisters, and the dream club. I love that differences between the Dream Club members. I adored learning more about the displays in the candy story. Dana is amazing! I loved learning more about the mansion and items inside. I enjoyed the moments with Noah. Of course the food mentioned at the dream club meeting make my mouth water. Looking forward to the next addition in the series.

Mysterious Saturday Review: Killer Reunion

* Book 21 in the Savannah Reid series * 

Savannah goes back home to attend her high school reunion. She's not thrilled at seeing her old classmates, but she's happy to see her family, especially her grandmother.

When her childhood nemesis engage she, Savannah looses her cool. At the end of the night, she slaps her.

When Jeannette goes missing, Savannah's the first suspect. She has the support of her family behind her, but plenty of people don't mind seeing her in trouble.  When a body is found, Savannah finds herself in a heap of trouble.

My Thoughts: I adore this series. I enjoyed learning more about Savannah's life as a teenager and her hardships, especially knowing how she left most of them behind. I liked meeting Tommy and watching him interact with Dirk. I thought Savannah was brave going back to her high school reunion - I'm not sure I would have if I had been in her situation. I enjoyed the ending moment with her sister. Of course I loved that moment where Savannah found peace in the library.

Mysterious Saturday Review: Newlywed Dead

* Book 3 in the Perfect Proposal series *

Pepper wants to make sure her sister has the perfect wedding - and she almost pulls it off. Luckily for her, the happy couple left before the bartender was murdered.

Pepper spent time talking with the bartender and she didn't seem disoriented. Yet when the tox screen comes back, it shows signs of drugs.

Pepper knows in her heart that Ashley was murdered - she just has to prove it.

My Thoughts: I really love this series - for the parties and proposals Pepper plans, for the relationships, and for the romance. I like how ethical Pepper is with her business and setting up people. I love how she plans parties for people - adding personal details to make it perfect for them. She has a kind heart, which allows her to make personal connections and great friendships. 

I like how she struck up a conversation with the bartender and how this murder became personal to her. I like her determination and her ability not to assume the worst of people.  I hope there are many more to this mystery series!

Mysterious Saturday Review: Mystery of the Zorse's Mask

 * Book 2 in the Curious Cat Spy Club series *

Becca is torn up about giving Zed back to his previous owner. She's not convinced that the owner didn't hurt Zed. Her gut tells her that everything about the man is wrong, but besides Zed's reactions, she's not sure how to prove it.

Luckily for her, the owner wants to recover the fly mask that was on the animal when he arrived at Becca's family animal refugee.  Becca enlists the help of Kelsey and Leo to recover the mask. She also wants to prove that Zed belongs with someone kind, not his owner.

When Kelsey takes matters into her own hands, she becomes wrapped up in a very dangerous situation. Could the club have gotten in over their heads this time?

My Thoughts: I really enjoyed the second book of this series - while the mystery is great, it's the other plot lines that hit me hard. Kelsey wants to make a good impression on people - so much so that she's willing to imitate them to become friends. But I love how Becca told her the truth about her sparkle friends. I love how the three friends are different and yet care so much about the same things. My heart broke for Zed. After reading this story, I wanted to give my puppy a huge hug and hold him tight. It was sad and yet hopeful. The danger scenes were intense. I'm eager to see what happens next to this group of friends and animal lovers.

Mysterious Saturday Review: Killer Takeout

* Book 7 in the Key West Food Critic series *

It's that time of year in Key West: Fantasy Fest. Hayley Snow has a full week. She has to report on several parties, test out some takeout places for her food critic article, and her mother's getting married.

But the fun goes sideways when she stumbles across a body during a zombie bike ride. The woman dies. At first no one knows either her identity nor how she died, but murder isn't ruled out.

One of Hayley's co-workers didn't get along with the woman who died. Before long, the police are taking a serious look at Danielle for murder.

Hayley knows she must get to the bottom of this, but in a zombie parade, it's hard to search for clues or anything out of place. On top of everything else, a hurricane threatens the island. This death needs to solved quickly.

My Thoughts: I really love this series and I was excited to read more about Fantasy Fest. I know a few people who have attended (no body paint for them), so it was fun to read about it and have stories from friends. I really liked how Hayley's grown as a character since the series started (and not just in terms of sleuthing).  I love reading more about her housemate. I loved the addition of the hurricane and how that threatened and hurried along the murder investigation - but Love how the hurricane worked out as well. I can't wait to read more in this series!

Mysterious Saturday Review: Wedding Cake Murder

 * Book 19 in the  Hannah Swensen series * 

Hannah's getting married and competing in a dessert food challenge on television. It's hard juggling both, especially when the dessert challenge reschedules for an earlier date.

Hannah and Michelle (her sous chef) come up with a plan for the competition. They fly to New York City for the first leg. Whoever wins the first competition, will have the competition moved to their town.

When one of the judges dies - murder, the heat is on to catch a killer and to finish the competition to the best of their abilities. With everything going on, it will be a miracle if everything works out.

My Thoughts: I really like this series (and the movies based on the series). I loved the food competition of this novel - seeing the other contestants interact, watching the food entries, and watching the judges reaction to their tastings. I loved the conversations revolving around Hannah's dessert entries. 

I wish we learned a little more about Ross. I hope that he comes up more in the next few books. I feel like we have limited knowledge of him and I'm not sure if I actually like him. The relationship between him and Hannah seems based in the past. They don't have the best communication moments...yet.

Mysterious Saturday Review: On Thin Icing

* Book 3 in the Bakeshop Mystery series *

Winter is tough in Ashland after the tourists leave. The locals come together to support each other. Jules and her mother are looking to branch out their business at Torte, so Jules is happy to receive a catering job.

She and Sterling head to a resort to provide the food for a board retreat. After arrival, they love the kitchen set-up, but it's clear this business might be too much for the owners. The place needs some serious work and the bartender should be fired immediately.

Jules is ready to make the best of the situation. Then her husband arrives, six months after they separated. A major storms hits the resort, knocking out power. To top it off, Jules discovers the body of the bartender stuffed in a freezer.

My Thoughts: I really enjoy this series - for the bakeshop knowledge, the food details, and the small town charm. I like watching the new relationship unfold between Jules and her mother. I like learning more about Jules' past and how it relates to her future. 

I really like how the characters were snowed in for the majority of the novel. It helped build tension in the mystery. You could feel the cold in the air - and of course the warmth of the fire. 

The characters pull the story together and leave you wondering what's going to happen next. I'm eager to see what happens with the Professor and Jules' mother. Jules herself has some life choices to make. I admit that I'm not a huge fan of Carlos, but I'm interested to see what's going to happen next in their relationship. I liked learning more about Sterling; he's a great character. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Mysterious Saturday Review: Dream A Little Scream

 * Book 2 in the Dream Club Mystery series *

Taylor and Ali can't believe their good fortune when celebrity chef Sonia Scott is forced to stay in town one more day and wants to do a book signing at their shop. They're excited for the publicity the event will bring - until Sonia dies in a horrible manner.

At first, it appears she died from an allergy attack, but as the clues separate, it appears that someone deliberately murdered her. Now Taylor and Ali attempt to pick up the pieces of their store's reputation by solving the murder so their live can return back to normal.

With a few dead ends, it's time to call their dream club in to help figure out what really happened that morning.

My Thoughts: I really enjoyed the second book in this southern series. I liked the questions surrounding the death or celebrity chef and learning more of her background. I loved learning more about the candy shop and their plans to drum up business for the future. Of course I love reading about the desserts the dream club eats. I really like learning more about dreams and their meanings. I wouldn't mind attending one of these sessions, just as long as my life isn't in danger. So looking forward to the next book in the series!

Upcoming Mysterious Saturday Review: Fogged Inn

* Book 4 in the Maine Clambake series *

Julia and Chris have their new adventure up and running - until one foggy night. A car crash blocks the street, keeping diners in their restaurant longer than normal. In the morning, Gus discovers a stranger in the walk in fridge - murdered.

Julia and Chris identify him as being in the restaurant last night. But they're not aware how he manged to get back inside or how he died.

Still the death effects their business and Julia can't help but look into the murder. She realizes that all the couples at the restaurant that night paid with a gift card. Could someone have wanted them all in the room at the same time?

Julia's not resting until she solves this murder and things go back to normal.

My Thoughts: I really love this series - it makes me long to visit Maine and to eat good food! I really like how things have evolved with Chris and Julia. I love their new adventure into the restaurant business.

I love how the story wove together between the past and the present. Those past summers sounded magical - great friends and lots of fun. But the horrors the group went through was really very sad.

I like how the fog rolls into town and everything seems a little quieter without the summer tourists. It's fun reading about a small town throughout the seasons. 

I'm quite looking forward to what happens next in Busman's Harbor...

Mysterious Saturday Review: Foreign Eclairs

 * Book 9 in the White House Chef Mystery series *

Strange events are happening to the White House staff. First a member takes personal time without an explanation. Ollie is mugged on the way home. Then there's news of a bombing of a federal prison - a prison in which a resident currently resides thanks to Ollie.

Soon it becomes clear that all three events are connected. Ollie's targeted in a revenge plot - someone wants her to pay. At first, the revenge plots start small, but quickly they escalate. Even Ollie isn't sure she's going to survive this one...

My Thoughts: I loved this series! This installment of the series reminds me of the show 24. I liked that every time they thought the revenge plot was finished, the book took another turn.  Lots of action, danger, and plot twists in this one. I devoured this book, not wanting to let go of the world and these characters. I needed to know what happened!

I liked how Gav and Ollie worked together to figure out and attempt to untangle this mess. 

As always, I love the background bits in the White House and I really enjoyed the search for a new chef. The interviews and candidates were entertaining. 

I really liked the scenes between Ollie and Josh. I like how she helped him and how he talked with his parents. I think being a kid/teen in White House would be very difficult. 

A wonderful series and as much as I want to know what happens next, I can imagine too.

Mysterious Saturday Review: Crowned and Moldering

* Book 3 in the Fixer-Upper Mystery series *

Shannon finally starts work on the historical lighthouse that her mystery thriller novel writing friend purchased. During the walk through, Shannon discovers the remains of a body in the dumbwaiter.

The body turns out to be Lily Brogan, a young girl who disappeared fifteen years ago. The police assumed she run away, but her brother kept looking. Now Sean learns that his sister has been murdered.

Sean's a member of Shannon's crew and a friend. Shannon wants to help him find justice and learn the truth once and for all about his sister's death.

When the past rears it's ugly head, will the truth finally come out?

My Thoughts: I love this series - Shannon is a tough, strong, loyal character - but she tends to react emotionally.  I like how the past came to the future in this murder and how Eric needed Shannon's knowledge of her hometown. I liked learning more about Sean - even though his history was terrible. I have high hopes for his future. I loved the addition of Callie - it would be nice to see her more in future books. 

I loved seeing the inside of Mac's house. I can't wait to see how it develops after the crew works on it!

Plus I like seeing Mac and Shannon's relationship develop a bit more...

I can't wait to see what happens next in this series.

Mysterious Saturday Review: Tiara on the Terrace

 *Book 2 in the Young and Yang series *

Sophie and Grace are helping out at the 125th annual Winter Sun Festival - a town tradition. Sophie's a little worried that Grace is over their big adventure and maybe her interests are turning. On the first day of preparations, the festival president turns up murdered.

Young and Yang are back on the case, only the death is ruled as an accident. These two aren't fooled and with the help of Trista, they realize they might be the ones interested in solving the murder.

In order to have access to all the suspects, the three friends volunteer as pages for the Royal Court. Sophie isn't thrilled with the idea, but even she admits that it's for a good cause.

As more people connected with the festival have accidents, including the three of them, Sophie and Grace are convinced that someone means business and these accidents were planned. Can they figure out who is behind everything before it's too late?

My Thoughts: I really love this duo -they're smart, determined, and quick on their feet. I liked seeing the behind the scenes of the royal court with learning decorum, photo opportunities, and making themselves beautiful for their big moment. I liked how the older girls bonded with the three friends, despite the forced bonding activities. I'm not a fan of forced bonding, but I really liked how these girls came together. 

I love Trista. She's terrible at spying but she's crazy smart.

I love how everything happens in the span of a few days, it heightened the tension for me.

I like how friendships are tested and the younger girls make mistakes in order to appear popular, but that they realize their mistakes. 

I like the almost romance plot.

Mysterious Saturday Review: Bodice of Evidence

 * Book 2 in the Perfect Proposals series *

Pepper's sister is getting married and she's looking for the perfect dress. After three shops, Felicity is feeling discouraged. The sisters and their mother take a quick break before heading to their last appointment.

When they arrive late, they're surprised to see no one in the shop. Pepper goes searching for anyone to help them and discovers the owner lying in the alley - murdered.

She struggles to understand the reason for the murder. Pepper convinces her sister to return to the store for another appointment. She has some questions to ask.

With Pepper's new business starting to take off, she doesn't have much time for snooping, but she doesn't let that stop her. Could she find out something that will land her in hot water?

My Thoughts: I really love this series. I love the relationship between Pepper and her sister. I liked seeing the women of the family shop for wedding dresses together. I love that Pepper's starting up her own business and I love watching it grow. It was interesting to see the wedding business from both the dress side and the proposal side (maybe the next one will take place in a bakery). I enjoyed the relationship that Pepper has with the police detective and wonder how that will start to change. I really like Gage and watching his relationship with Pepper grow. He seems smart, sweet, and willing to wait for her to find herself. I love that she's not just jumping into another relationship, that she's taking some time to find herself after her last relationship.

Mysterious Saturday Review: Driving Heat

* Book 7 in the Nikki Heat series * 

A promotion brought Nikki Heat to the rank of Captain. When Heat's psychologist turns up murdered on her first morning, she's surprised to see Rook's on the surveillance video going into the office. He won't tell her why he was at the office. Heat doesn't appreciate being kept in the dark, especially when she feels it will help her case. Files were stolen from the office and she's worried about them falling into the wrong hands.

In order to make her team run smoothly, she jointly promoted Roach to run the case. But even Raley and Ochoa are trying to one up each other for the permanent promotion.

Throw in the fact that Nikki's getting cold feet about the wedding and tension between her and Rook escalates. This investigation brings out the worst in all the relationships in this book. Can they work together and solve the murder before the murderer comes for one of them?

My Thoughts: As a huge fan of the show, I'm happy when more Richard Castle books come out. This one wasn't my favorite - mostly because all the characters were at each other's throats and I didn't enjoy that type of tension. The overall mystery pushes to book forward with lots of suspects, clues, and dead ends. I love the tidbits that overlap the TV show and the book.

Mysterious Saturday Review: Spoonful of Murder

* First in a series *

Lucky Jamieson's parents died leaving her their soup cafe in Vermont. Lucky hasn't been back in years, but she puts her life on hold to return home.  As she's struggling to get her feet underneath her, someone's murdered behind the restaurant.

As the numbers of customers dwindle, Lucky begins to lose hope of maintaining the cafe.  She's worried about being able to pay the bills. She decides to poke around in the murder to see if she can uncover any answers. When her cook's arrested for the murder, customers stop coming in all together. The murder needs to be solved - and quickly. The more questions, Lucky asks, the more she riles up town people. Could she be next on the list?

My Thoughts: I really enjoyed this cozy mystery - especially the setting. As a Vermont girl, I felt like going home and hunkering down for the cold winter nights. I loved the small town and the local people.

I liked Lucky, although I thought she made several questionable decisions. I did like how she attempted to patch things up with her former friend. I also admired how she's attempting to re-imagine her life back in Vermont, even without her parents.

I loved Lucky's grandfather.He was smart, sweet, and a gentlemen. I hope to see much more of him in the series. 

I loved the moments of cooking in the cafe, it made me want to eat a delicious sandwich and a hot bowl of soup.

Mysterious Cozy Review: Malice at the Palace

* Book 9 in the Royal Spyness Series *

After returning from America, Lady Georgiana stays at her friend Belinda's place. Belinda's supposed to be in America still, but she comes home quite unexpectedly. Now Georgie's looking for a place to live again. Luckily she runs into her brother, who's in town. He insists that she stay with them.

Knowing that Lady Georgiana is back in London, the Queen invites her to the palace. She has a job for Georgie. She asks Georgie show Princess Marina of Greece the city of London before her upcoming wedding to Prince George. Georgie couldn't be happier. She moves into a palace straight away.

Unfortunately, she also stumbles across another body - outside the palace. Socialite Bobo Carrington used to roam in the same circle as the groom. Rumors of her fast life swirl as Lady Georgie attempts to discreetly determine if any of her peers could be the guilty party without derailing the royal wedding.

My Thoughts: I still love this historical cozy series and I love seeing more of the Royals. I especially love it when Lady Georgiana has to meet the Queen for tea. I liked seeing more of the princes this book as well.

I love these books also for the secondary characters and we see quite a bit of them in this book. New additions include Princess Marina, who was lovely. And Countess Irmtraut who didn't understand enough about the English language. She was always out of the loop and had no sense of humor. 

I liked how Lady Georgie poked around society looking for clues as to who could have wanted the Prince framed for murder so close to his wedding. I like how the police used her to ask questions delicately while still getting answers.

Mysterious Saturday Review: Diva Steals a Chocolate Kiss

* Book 9 in the Domestic Diva series *

Sophie's helping out with Amore Chocolates 50th Anniversary party. She's in charge of making sure things run smoothly with all the contest winners.

When the CEO, Joe Merano goes missing, the family asks Sophie to look for him. He would never miss his party - unless something was really wrong.

When she discovers the body of their main competition after one event, things start getting ugly. As Sophie digs around, she uncovers some family secrets that might have been better off hidden...

My Thoughts: I really love this series! This new addition didn't disappoint; it's perfectly fantastic centered around a chocolate festival. I loved learning more about the chocolate business. 

I felt bad for the Merano family - they had so many secrets and terrible things that happened between them. My heart went out to all of them.

I liked the new addition to the usual crew with the contest winners in town - especially the former police woman. She and her friend livened up the story. 

As usual, I had mixed feelings about both Mars and Natasha. I can never decide if I feel sorry for them or if they bring everything upon themselves. Still, they lighten the plot and add humor to the story...

Mysterious Saturday Review: Grace Cries Uncle

 * Book 6 in the Manor House Mystery series * 

Grace has finally agreed to DNA testing to prove if she and her boss are in fact related. Since she started work at Marshfield Manor, she's felt a connection to Bennett, but she isn't interested in being his heir. She doesn't want anything to change, but she would like to keep this information private.

With people showing up at the house asking questions, Grace becomes uneasy, especially when one of them turns up murdered behind her house.

So she's thrown for a loop when out of the blue her estrange sister appears on her doorstep. Liza claims that she left Eric (the man who was once engaged to Grace) and needs a place to stay. Grace reluctantly allows her sister to stay with them. Could her sister have something to do with this mess?

My Thoughts: I adore this series. I love the connection between Grace and Bennett. In this addition to the series, I enjoyed getting to know Liza. I was surprised by her and a little stunned by her actions. I hope we get more details in the next book.

I really enjoy the secondary characters - especially Frances (she's smart, sarcastic, almost thoughtful, a gossip, and loyal.) I admit even Hillary is growing on me. 

This book took a turn I didn't expect, which intrigued me all the more. I can't wait to see what happens next and how everything shakes out.

Final Thoughts: Another win for Julie Hyzy. I love this series - great characters and enough actin and danger to keep me quickly turning the pages. If you haven't started this series, get on it!
