Picture Book Review: Halloween Books

Here a few Halloween books that came late to the library last year:

When one little girl's Halloween plans are forced to change, she investigates what everyone else is doing before making her final plans.

I love how Janelle investigated everyone's plans and then created a plan for herself.  It was fun to see everyone's Halloween traditions. I loved how everything turned out.

It's the time of year when the wall between our world and the spirit world is at it's thinnest. Sam and his friends celebrate Samhain.

It's an interested look at a not-well known (to me) holiday. I liked the end note that talks about Samhain and it's connection to Halloween. There are also some spells at the back of the book.

Finn, a ghost, is scared to go out on Halloween and then misses his favorite candy. He's so sad that he decides that next Halloween he will join his family. He works hard all year to face his fears. He starts small and works up to bigger moments. Will he be able to go out?

This was a great book about all the scary things in the world and about facing your fears. There are setbacks and hard moments. But everyone has those. This book can be great for discussion about fears and how to work with them.

It's almost Halloween and there's so much to do to get ready for the big day!

What are your favorite Halloween traditions? This book covers them all with bright illustrations that readers will want to pour over.

This board book will get readers ready for Halloween.

This super cute book has soft charming illustrations and a fun cast of characters.

As nature starts to change and fall arrives, it's time to start prepping for Halloween. There's so much to do!

This was a charming Halloween story about all the built-up excitement about waiting for the day to arrive. The art is unique and fun to pour over.

** this book is much older, but it's new to me.

Picture Book Wednesday: Halloween Books

A few Halloween books: picture books and board books

Are there tricks or treats for these three friends at the Halloween party?

A cute board book with slides dealing spooky and fun.

In Ireland, turnips were used to scare a trickster spirit named Jack. But in American, there aren't any turnips, but Lila can't tell her siblings that. Life in America is different - crowded and noisy. Lila meets Julia and together, they think pumpkins might be the answer.

I did not know Halloween started from Irish immigrants.

A little girl is super excited for Halloween.

She does all the traditional things: carve the pumpkins, decorating the house, trick or treating, and busting a move at a party. This rhyming story will get anyone into the Halloween spirit. This is the third book in this picture book series. I can't wait to see what's next in this series. I loved the ending.

What do dinosaurs do at Halloween?

This is another fun book in this dinosaur series - lots of rhyming and lots of funny moments.

Picture Book Wednesday: Bruce and the Legend of Soggy Hollow

Bruce is always grumpy, but he Really doesn't like Halloween! But his year, the mice have an idea. They want to act out the Legend of Soggy Hollow and Bruce has a starring role.

My Thoughts: I Love this series - Bruce is grumpy and adorable. The mice are mischievous. They're always trying to get Bruce involved. They make the book so funny. I love the moose. And there is a little creepiness to the story. A fantastic addition to the series

Spooky Review: Boo! Hiss!

Best friends live together - until a family moves in. They don't need a family living in their space. First, they move everything. Then they're super loud - especially the baby. Ghost and Snake just want their house back! They decide to scare them into moving out. But it turns out differently than they expected!
My Thoughts: This graphic novel is super cute! I loved the friendship story - how they fight and make up. I love their reaction when the family moves in. Their scaring tactics are funny. The ending is sweet. And the illustrations are charming.

Cover Thoughts: Perfect

Library Recommendation: Highly recommended for your school and public libraries.

More Halloween Picture Books

Nothing goes right on Crankenstein's favorite day of the year...until it does.

A Halloween tale that will generate empathy over a bad day during all the Halloween fun

This bad seed is upset that none of his costume ideas worked out. What if he could postpone the holiday until he has more time for a better costume?

Another book about empathy and feeling the pressure of holidays - when you just need to be yourself.

If you're a dinosaur fan - this is a great mash-up of Halloween fun and dinosaurs.

Pumpkins turn into Pumpkin Heads on Halloween night - and each other is a little bit different.

Lots of different faces in this book.

Halloween Picture Books

A few new Halloween books came into the library this week:

A witch in your book is making a terrible mess - maybe magic will help clean it up!

I love these books and Tom Fletcher is really popular at my library. These fun interactive books are great for storytimes.

Creepy monsters won't leave the town alone but Curly Locks might have the solution.

A little bit creepy but very fun, this cooking book is sure to please readers.

For anyone who can't get enough of Baby Shark. The ending is cute here!

For those who love We're Going on a Bear Hunt with a spooky vibe!

Halloween Picture Book: How to Scare a Ghost

My new picture books haven't arrived at the library yet. Hopeful for a delivery next week.

Here's a fun one I read last year:

In order to scare a ghost - you have to find one. But what happens when the ghost is already there and you don't see it?
I loved the illustrations in this book. I love how they ghost became a new friend of the two kids. Such a fun Halloween read.
