My Thoughts: I really liked this book. But apparently, I didn't read the first book. Oops. Going to go back and read that one ASAP. I did feel like I was forgetting things, but I wasn't lost. The second book was a cute story - everything was tough for Mindy. Her relationship with her mom is changing now that her mom has a boyfriend. Her relationship with her friends are changing as they are becoming closer with Hazel. Hazel's in a wheelchair and there were moments where the main characters realized how inaccessible houses were for Trick or Treating or for dog walking. It's always hard to add a new friend to a friend group. I felt bad for Mindy, I just wanted to wrap her up in a hug. She felt so left out in all areas of her life. She started communicating with her friends and finally let go of her anger. She learned to accept the changes in her life.

My Thoughts: OK, it's hard to talk about this one. Because I loved it so much. I'm a big fan of figure skating but I confess, I don't know much about ice dancing. This book made me want to learn more about it! I loved the Adrianna. I loved how this was a Persuasion re-telling (and it was SO good!). I loved the angst between all the partners. I loved the love triangle (which is not something I say often). I really liked how Adriana came from a family of skaters, but how she made her own mark on the sport. I like how she held everything and everyone together. Such a great book, I didn't want it to end. I can't wait to see what Jennifer Iacopelli writes next! She's quickly become a favorite author of mine.

Review: Taste Test for Love

 

Liza Yang and her mother have a complicated relationship. Her mother's always trying to set her up with horrible boys. Boys that Liza would never consider dating. She dates boys on the sly - boys her mother would never pick out. She's not interested in dating Asian boys or her mother's traditional values. More than anything she wants to got to culinary school and bake. 

Liza often works in her mother's bakery. But her parents don't want that life for her. They want more for their children. Liza's older sister is perfect in her parents' eyes. Liza wishes she could be more appreciated instead for being molded into someone she's not.

It's the 5th annual baking contest at her parents' bakery. Liza isn't allowed to compete, but she and her parents have come to a comprise. She can be one of the judges for the contest. Little does she know, her mother's plan for the contest. And she's not pleased. The only way to get her mother off her back is to start dating an approved boy. But is she willing to do that?

My Thoughts: The tagline was Jane Austen meets Great British Baking Show. Which sold me on the book. And it was exactly that - and I loved it. I loved Liza. I loved the moments in the bakery and trying out new recipes. This book did make me want to bake. I loved her moments with her sister - who is a model. I especially loved their time together in New York City. I enjoyed her banter with James. I really loved the baking competition and how that turned out. I loved the friendships in this book. What a fantastic debut novel. I can't wait to read more from this author!

Review: Break the Fall

Audrey Lee's dream came true - she's going to the Olympics! She can't believe it - and she's going with her best friend Emma. The two of them have been working towards this goal forever. She just hopes her back will be strong enough to last through the last little bit of her competitive life.

Audrey's not sure what to believe about her coach, but she starts to understand the signs. Her new coach isn't letting the girls practice as much as they would be. And she's falling for a boy who is off limits.

With a month left until the biggest days of her life, how is she supposed to hold it all together and bring home the gold medal she's been working towards her entire life?

My Thoughts: I LOVED this book; I couldn't put it down. It gave me the biggest book hangover. I'm a huge fan of gymnastics, so I loved reading about this sport (especially at such a high level). I loved the teamwork and the sisterhood - even though not all teammates were supportive. I loved the story how they came together. I loved Audrey's determination, her strength, and her ability to focus. My heart broke for the girls as I read about the abuse at the hands of their coach. I love how that wasn't glossed over but everything happened off page.  I loved the reality of the ending. I adore the eyeshadow part. I can't wait to read more from Jennifer Iacopelli!

Review: Glittering Court

Elizabeth Witmore, Countess of Rothford, simply isn't interested in the marriage her grandmother deems necessary. So she steals her maid's identity and joins The Glittering Court - a marriage service for the New World.

First the servants must be trained properly in the arts of becoming a wife. As a former countess, Elizabeth (now Adelaide) understands all of these rules. However, in hiding her true self, she must make the others believe that she doesn't know everything they're teaching her.

When she realizes that the man who brought her to the court is in trouble, she vows to help him. But in helping him she risks her own future. Is he worth the risk?

My Thoughts: The Selection meets British aristocracy and the Gold Rush. I really enjoyed this book - I liked Elizabeth/Adelaide. She had opinions and feelings and she wasn't afraid to voice them. I liked her two best friends: Mira and Tamsin. I enjoyed her moments with Cedric - their banter, their friendship, and finally when that turned into something more. I like how the place and setting tied in with Britain and also the Old West. I found those parts fascinating and enjoyed how they were blended together.

Library recommendation: Recommended purchase. Great book to give readers of historical fiction and/or fans of the Selection.  

Final Thoughts: I'm very interested to see where the next book leads.

Review: An Ember in the Ashes

Soldiers come into Laia's home, looking for her brother. He has a book of drawings that he's determined to keep hidden. When he tells Laia to run, she does, knowing that she's leaving him behind. Her grandparents died and her brother's taken into custody.

Ashamed of her inability to act that night she offers up her services in exchange for her brother's freedom. She goes undercover in the Commandant's household.

It's the most dangerous thing Laia has ever done and it could be the death of her if she doesn't play her cards right. She runs into Elias, who's going through a series of tests to crown the next leader.

No one knows that Elias has been questioning his loyalty lately. He isn't ready to give up everything, but he's getting closer.

Their paths cross and they can either help each other or their friendship could be the end of both of them.

My Thoughts: I really really enjoyed this book and I'm so happy there's a sequel in the works. 

Ok, yes, the book was violent - with several references to women/girls being raped, the commander has a history of violence, and there's that whole battle scene that's just heartbreaking. And it's not gratuitous - its in their world. 

I loved the strong women - women who risked everything for a cause, women who ruled their world, and women who defied the odds to make themselves stand out. 

I loved the lies, the secrets, and the relationships between everyone. It made the book all the more intriguing. 

I liked learning about the Scholars and the rebels. I liked learning about the soldiers and their life. 

I liked the choices the characters had to chose between duty, family, loyalty, and their own interests. 

All in all, I devoured this book and I've been thinking about it ever since.

Mini Review: Ruby Circle

 

* Book 6 in the Bloodlines series *

Sydney and Adrian fight for their future together while fighting for ones they love. Jill's been kidnapped and they will do anything to get her back. Unfortunately, they're stuck behind the walls at Court for their own safety. That won't stop them for long...

The Good: 
Seeing Sydney kick butt on more time.
Leverage
That ending made me sigh with happiness.

The Bad:

It's over and I don't think more spin-off series are coming.

Final Thoughts: Great end to the series, I'll miss these characters, but I'm glad to see where they ended up. 

Review: Vitro

When Sophie gets an urgent email from her mother asking her for help, she returns to the island where she grew up. After several long flights, she finally lands, determined to find the island her mother's working on, but no one seems to acknowledge it's existence. Finally, she's told a local hangout where she might be able to find a pilot.

The pilot who agrees to take her is none other than her best friend from childhood. As soon as they reach the island, trouble begins. The plane suffers a serious accident - leaving them stranded. They split up - Sophie goes to find her mother while Jim attempts to revive the plane. That's when everything goes from bad to worse - what's really happening on this island and why is it such a big secret?

My Thoughts: This companion novel to Origin was intense: high stakes, lots of action and danger. Ethical questions about genetics and genetic engineering are called into question. These questions make the future seem like an endless stream of possibilities - but many of those are horrific. With this kind of technology, the world can become radically different. I felt horrible for Sophie growing up with her mother for so long, but I like how she found Jim. The plot twists and the horror of the book made me gasp at every turn. This book kept me thinking long after I turned the final page - a fantastic thriller.

Summer Books Event at RJ Julias

On Friday, Erin and I attended Summer Reads stop at RJ Julia's and it was a blast! Lots of laughter and lots of talking. Here's some notes on the tour. 

Susane Colasanti:
All I Need is her 7th book (read my review here)
She wanted to write a beautiful summer romance - the kind of romance she always hoped would happen to her one summer. It never did. She always thought this summer was going to be the one that changed her -either a romance or she would reinvent herself. But it never did and summers were always boring.
So she wrote this book. 

Also in this book, she writes about Soul Mates. She confesses that she's obsessed with Soul Mates and that everyone has one.
She also confesses that she's still 16 at heart.
She loves her job because she can reach out to teens and make them feel less alone. She loved being a science teacher (10 years) but believes that she can help more teens as a writer. She wants them to be able to survive the worst time in the lives, knowing that it really does get better. 

She used to fight with her high school English teacher over the books assigned for school. She would read them, but she never really liked the classics. The Outsiders was the only book she had to read for school that she enjoyed. Otherwise, she'd be reading Stephen King. 

Huntley Fitzpatrick:

My Life Next Door is her debut novel (although she has 2 other books written that will never be published)

She believes that you can change your past with writing and make things better.
She's a hopeless romantic and adores the Happily Ever After Ending - which she brings to her books.
She always reads the ends of books first, so she knows if she wants to read it or not and if it has a satisfying ending. 

For her book, she wanted to take the star-crossed lovers theme from Romeo and Juliet and change it. She didn't want the main characters to be impulsive and immature with crazy families, and of course, the two characters don't die at the end. The ending of that tale always bugged her.
She loves writing YA because it's the time where all the first experiences happen and because teens are so curious and questioning everything during this time in their lives.

Leila Howland

Nantucket Blue is also her debut novel 

It's a novel about friendships and what happens when a great friendship breaks up.
It's based off of her experience as at the time she was breaking up with her best friend. When she went looking for books to read, she couldn't find any.
She wanted to explore the idea further and started writing to let out her emotions and heartbreak.
In her book, she wanted to make a perfect girl - and then place her into a summer where Everything goes wrong for her. She says something wrong at a major life event for someone else, and then she can't take it back. Regret follows and then Shame.
How can she make it right?
But also Leila wanted to figure out what's the worst thing that this one friend could do after a best friends breakup? 

She had previously written a novel for adults, but was told that her voice was too young. Her agent sent her some YA titles by E. Lockhart and Natalie Standiford. She found urgency to writing and entertainment value with lots of emotion. She couldn't put the books down. She finally found her voice after reading these books. A sequel will be coming next summer. 

Una LaMarche
Five Summers is also a debut novel. (Read my review here)
While it's her first novel (ever written and published), she has a background in journalism.
It's a novel about friendship based off some of her own camp experiences. She attended a camp with an annual dance, so she added that into the book.
She wanted to make this centered on friendships and what happens to the friendships after a few years of not seeing each and a few secrets that could damage the relationship.
She has a love/hate relationship with books where the main characters were clearly meant to be together, but never did - like Little Women and Circle of Friends. She's crushed when the romance doesn't work out the way she expected. 

She used to keeps a diary - but sometimes her life was so boring she wrote fictional accounts of her day. 

Review: Five Summers

Four girls attend camp - they find themselves in the same cabin their first year. They become best friends and spend the next five years living for the summers. Since camp ended, life took over and their friendships have fallen by the wayside. However, they have one more chance to come together: camp reunion.

All four of them will be there this year - for the first time in three years, they will all be together. Secrets will be shared, drama will ensue, romance might begin or end. Through it all, they always believed they would have each other. Can they find a way to come back together or will this weekend destroy them?

My Thoughts: I really enjoyed this book. I loved the multiple perspectives and how the plot moved through time from their first summer to the present day. Although, there was plenty of relationship drama, I really liked how the focus was on the four girls. I loved how different the four girls were and yet how they were so close. I felt bad for Jo, who seemed on the outside a lot of the time. I felt sorry for Maddie who hide a huge secret. I felt betrayed by Skylar on Emma's behalf. A great book on friendship and what it means.

Review: Our Song

Olive died for a little less than three minutes following a car accident. When she awakes in a hospital - her world has drastically changed. Three weeks later, she's beginning to understand.

Her mother no longer trusts her. Her boyfriend never came to the hospital to check up on her. The only people standing by her are her best friend and her younger brother. People talk about her at school. She can't sleep.

Her mother believes she needs to talk to a professional. She decides to travel outside her area to attend a Near Death Society support group. It's weirder than she ever imagined, but that's where she meets Nick.

Nick makes her feel things. The more time she spends with him, the better she feels. She might be neglecting her best friend and making her parents unhappy, but she's trying to find herself. Should she try to fall back in line or make her own path?

My Thoughts: I loved this book - I loved unraveling Olive's story and the layers of relationships. I liked the relationship between Olive and Annie. I like how Annie supported Olive, but wasn't afraid to tell her the truth. I enjoyed the side story of Annie's photography and Olive learning to like taking pictures.  Nick and Olive's relationship is adventurous, soul-searching, and sweet. I like how Olive's parents and her understanding of them changed throughout her journey.

Review: Indigo Spell

 *Third book in the Bloodlines series*

Sydney's attending a wedding, to show that relations between the Moroi and the Alchemists are improving. At the wedding, she takes great lengths to hide her feelings and her true relationship with Adrian. Among her peers, Sydney tries to blend into the background.

Already, her questions have raised some eyebrows. When Sydney realizes that  she's been lied to, she takes matters into her own hands. She tracks down the elusive Marcus Finch.

 She learns what he knows -and isn't happy. Will his information change her path? Between uncovering the truth and tracking down a magical killer, Sydney doesn't have a lot of free time to decide her fate.

 
My Thoughts: I'm SUCH a fan of this series. I'm even starting...to like Adrian. I didn't like him from the previous books, but now...he's captured my interest. I really enjoy this group of characters and their chemistry together. I love their loyalty to each other and how they've grown as friends - despite their pasts. 

I loved watching Sydney uncover more information about the Alchemists and their history. She's a very strong character - fiercely determined, loyal, and brilliant. However, I admit waiting for the chinks in her armor to appear.  I liked watching her struggle with her feelings and with her sense of duty.  I adored Jill for stepping in when she did. I felt horrible for Eddie - I hope to see more of him in the next book.

I found the magical subplot intriguing. Mrs Terwilliger is smart, crafty, and powerful. I like her interactions with Sydney. She's good at poking holes in Sydney's preconceived thoughts. 

Clearly, I love watching Sydney grow as a character with the help of the secondary characters. All in all, a fabulous read filled with action, danger, and romance!

Review: Golden Lily

* Bloodlines book 2*

Since Sydney handled the situation so well, her stock has gone up among the Alchemists. She's praised and her actions have been held up for approval. While Sydney realizes she did well in that one instance, she knows that she doesn't always have the Alchemist's best interests in mind.

She's hanging out with her charges - for fun and not just for the sake of protection. She's dating a boy. She's learning, against her will, about magic.  In short, she's starting to care.

Can she achieve the fine balance between her job and her personal life?

My Thoughts: I really like this series, although my heart still belongs to the Vampire Academy series. The characters are growing on me and showing character development. The action, danger, and the mystery surrounding Jill and Adrian keep the pages turning fast. 

I like Sydney's brains. She's super smart and not afraid to show it. I admire that. She loosens up a little in this book, which is fun to watch. I like getting to know Adrian better -I'm starting to warm up to him a little after watching him deal with his father. My heart went out to him. I also found Angeline more mature and interesting. She provides a bit of humor too! 

I'm curious about Jill's future and the vampire hunters. I think they're going to make the next book very interesting!

Fun Fact: Richelle Mead's books are often my go-to book for adults who read Twilight and come back looking for more vampire books. As a result, they're very popular with the adults at the library.

Teen Character Book Outfit: Sydney Sage

I adore Richelle Mead and her Vampire Academy series. I just finished The Golden Lily, part of the spin off series Bloodlines. Sydney is pretty conservative - here's something I picture her wearing.

Review: Falling Kingdoms

For centuries, the kingdoms have known peace. Recent events threaten to change that. A murder of a vendor becomes a turning point. Anger boils over to eruption. Why should one kingdom prosper while others wilt? Why should people go hungry when others have too much food?

When Princess Cleiona crosses the sea with a group of friends, what starts out as a day of fun goes drastically wrong. The consequences of her inability to react and stop the death of a merchant's son will change her life. Her father's determined to curtail her actions.

He announces her engagement to the man who murdered the young boy. Cleo doesn't want to marry Aron. She despises him,  but she can't refuse, especially since he was a secret that could ruin her. How can she convince her father that she'll never be happy with Aron. How can she stop her world from crumbling?

My Thoughts: A teen Game-of-Thrones-esq book complete with political intrigue, romance, heartache, death, and danger. I read this book on a long plane ride and loved every second of it. It made my long day so much better. I tore through this novel, it was impossible to put down!

I loved the plot twists and turns. Just when I thought something was going to happen, something drastically changed to turn everything upside down. It all played with my emotions from hope to danger to horror to sympathy. A fantastic high fantasy novel that left me desperately wanting more!

Review: Future of Us

Josh and Emma used to be best friends, but that was before Josh tried to kiss Emma. Now they talk, but their friendship has an awkwardness that they can't seem to get past.

Then Josh brings over an AOL disk for Emma's new computer. Emma logs in and immediately sees Facebook - and herself in the future. She's married. Curious, she calls Josh.

Together, they try to figure out what Facebook could be and who they are in the future. They realize that the actions of today changes the outcome of their future.

What will they change?

My Thoughts: I LOVED this book- it hooked me from the beginning. However, my teen years were the 90s when AOL and dial-up internet were in fashion. I hope that today’s teens can relate to the story because it was great. I loved the friendship turned romance. I loved how Emma changed her future with knowledge of Facebook. I loved the alternative perspectives. I’ll be so curious to see if teen gobble it up as fast as I did.

Cover Thoughts: I like it, but it's hard to see what's in the background. I like the fuzziness- as the future changes.

Sydney's given an important assignment - even though she's in the doghouse with the other alchemists after helping Rose. She volunteers to go to save her sister from being inducted into the alchemists. Instead of being grateful, her sister takes her interference the wrong way.

Sick at heart, Sydney leaves for a mission with her worse enemy. She's to assumer a new identity in order to protect Jill, the newly found Moroi princess. Sydney and Jill are to become roommates at a boarding school. Eddie lives at the school as their brother. Adrian lives nearby - still nursing his broken heart.

Jill just wants to be normal, but as Sydney digs deeper, she learns the real reason for her protection. Her instincts tell her that something isn't right. There's a rogue alchemist on the loose...

Can Sydney keep Jill safe?

My Thoughts: It took me a few chapters to get into the story - but then I was hooked. While I'm not a huge Adrian fan (and prefer Dimitri), he still interests me. When I first heard about the spin-off series, I really thought Jill was going to be the main character. Instead, the books center around Sydney protecting her, similar to Rose protecting Lissa. There were a few parts of the book that didn't fit in for me - mainly the scenes where Sydney throws a fit about her weight/clothing size change. I liked her relationship with Jill and Adrian. I loved her sleuthing skills. I feel that she's different - yet similar to Rose, which is great. She's really strong, determined, protective, and sweet. So looking forward to Golden Lily out next June.

Review: Last Sacrifice

Rose is in jail, awaiting her trial for the murder of Queen Tatiana. Rose isn't good at being patient and away from the action. She can't stand being locked up. It's driving her crazy.

Then her father lawyer comes for a visit telling her the trial date has been moved up. Now, instead of having a month, they might have two weeks. Rose knows that's not going to be enough time to uncover the real murderer.

She doesn't have much time to worry because on the date of the funeral, her friends break her out of prison. Now she's on the run and supposed to go into hiding.

But Rose never does anything the easy way. She also has a secret to uncover from the late Queen. Can she clear her name and put the kingdom back to rights or will she be forever on the outside?

My Thoughts: Perfect ending for an amazing series. I'm not going to say too much, because reading something on twitter spoiled the ending for me, but just rest assured that it's the best ending ever.

I'm SO looking forward to the spin-off series. I can't wait to find out what happens.

Review: In Your Room

Molly and Charlie both have plans for the summer - until they learn their parents arranged for a house swap.

Now, Molly will be in Colorado and Charlie will be heading for L.A.

Molly's mom remarried. Together, the three of them will be in Colorado. Molly feels like the third wheel and picks up a job to get out of the way. Soon, she's immersed in new ideas for the used clothing store and generating more customers. She loves her job and uses the experience as inspiration for her own work.

Charlie doesn't know what to do with himself. He loves the outdoors and trail riding, but L.A. isn't the ideal location for him. When he meets Molly's friend, she provides him with a source of entertainment.

Charlie and Molly begin to email - it's slow at first and about random items dealing with each other's room. Soon the emails begin to lengthen as they divulge personal information. Could they be falling in love over email?

My Thoughts: I really loved this debut tale. It sucked me in and I never looked back. I loved the sweet romance. I loved the emails between Charlie and Molly. I loved how they trusted each other and their friendship evolved. I enjoyed the different perspectives - especially Molly's fashion bits. I loved how she begin to trust Charlie as he guided her on adventures. I can't wait to read Fraiberg's next book.

Cover Thoughts: Cute. I think it stands out a bit.
