Book Pairings: Picture Books and Nonfiction

I've only done a few of these. See the previous ones here. But in reading picture books, I found some pairings.

Mail:

 

Your Friend, Parker: Parker goes on vacation and writes to her friend back home about all her adventures.

Mike Delivers: Mike delivers the mail, but he happens to notice something stuck in the garbage truck.

A Trip to the Post Office: Shares all about mail and the Post Office - a great behind the scenes look.

Voting:

 

Vote For Minnie: Minne's running for President of a club - a great look at running a campaign and how the voting process works.

Lillian's Right To Vote: Lillian is a 100-year-old Black woman and she's voting for the first time - the past comes to life as she climbs the steps to the polls.

Vote For Our Future: The elementary school closes on voting day, but the students help participate in voting and encouraging everyone to vote for a better world.

Stars:

Minnie's Starry Night: Minnie wants to see the stars, but every time they look up, something is blocking their view

Hello Star: One little girl sees a dying star and it sparks a lifelong journey for knowledge about space and stars. It also sparks a dream to travel to space. 

Northern Lights: A great introduction to the Northern Lights.

Camping and Parks:

 

 

Mickey's Camper Day: The gang goes camping but not everyone is focused on the great outdoors.

Acadia National Park and Grand Canyon National Park: Part of series of books that introduces readers to the parks with great photographs.

You are Home: Shares a love of America's National Parks with gorgeous illustrations.

Book Pairings (3): The White House

 

It's time for another book pairing! This week's focus is political books.

Joey: Dr. Jill Biden wrote about her husband's childhood and how it put him on the path to becoming President of the United States. While this is a picture book, it's a long picture book. So it's better suited for Elementary School readers. 

Joe Biden: This is a much longer biography with lots of details about Joe Biden's childhood, the  terrible accident that tore apart his family, meeting Jill, his first run for President, and his time as Vice President. The readers will learn more details about President Biden. Just shy of 250 pages, this read is for upper Elementary School readers. 

Why the Pairing: Both books will help the reader learn more about our 46th President of the United States - depending on your age level. These books will share more about the man behind the Presidency and how his life brought him here. 

Shaking Up the House: The time for the the Lopez family in the White House is coming to a close. One sister is sad; the other sister is happy. But neither of them expect to participate in a prank war with the incoming family's children.

Exploring the White House: Have you ever wondered about the White House building itself? Here's the perfect book complete with maps, photos, and fun facts. This book covers pets, ghosts, and so much more!

Why the Pairing: In Shaking Up the White House - the characters talk about secret tunnels and different rooms. It would be great to see a map of the White House and understand all the details about working or living in the mansion. 

 

Kamala and Maya's Big Idea: These cousins do not like the idea of not being able to play in the courtyard of the apartment complex. They feel they could turn it into a playground but the owner of the building doesn't agree. That doesn't stop them. 

Who is Kamala Harris?: This book is shorter than the rest of the series (because Kamala Harris is still alive). But it's full of information about her life before she became Vice President. 

Why the Pairing: It's fun to read a story about Kamala Harris when she's younger and compare that to her political life. 

 

Michelle Obama: This is an introduction to Michelle Obama. It's short and sweet, but it highlights the important information.

Reach Higher: This is a photo book of Michelle Obama and her time in the White House. It's fun to see so many different part of her life as First Lady and all the people she touched during those eight years. The pictures make this a perfect book to share. 

Why the Pairing: These two books highlight a very important life. It's nice for a little background information before viewing all the pictures.

To be honest, I forgot about this idea until I read the tea books.

I have a couple fiction and nonfiction pairings for you today.

 

Tea Parties Around the World: After a quick introduction, this books travels the world (alphabetically) through some of the countries that enjoy tea. Each country has little tidbits about  history of tea and the way tea is served. There's a full menu for tea accompanied by recipes and gorgeous photographs. 

Teatime Around the World: a Picture book with just a few words on the page telling the story along with text sharing information about tea in different areas in the world. And it includes the author's Tea Story - which is fun.

Why the Pairing: It was fun learning different ways people drink tea around the globe and both books give you that information. Perfect for readers of different generations to read together. 

* these books inspired me to have my own tea parties and try out recipes I've been meaning to try. So, I decided that once a month I'm going to host a tea party (right now because of the pandemic it's just me and my husband). We drink from the fancy cups and eat delicious treats.

Lore: This is a new action packed YA book based on Greek Mythology where the gods become mortal for seven days and the hunt begins. They can be killed by descendants of ancient bloodlines. And Lore has a score to settle - even though she escaped that world. Someone brings her back in...

D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths: Stories of Greek Mythology.

Why the pairing: In the author's notes, Alexandra Bracken talks about using this book as research and inspiration. I wasn't familiar with this idea behind her book, but it seems that others are. Probably because they know more about Greek Mythology than I do... perhaps they read this book!

Golden Gate: This is the second book in the series where two of the five teenage spies are brought into the public eye. This presents a very large problem where they have to lie. But someone is always watching and putting pieces of a bigger puzzle together. Could their found family be in danger?

The Secret Life of Spies: This nonfiction book shares the secrets of 20 known spies across cultures and time period. Each spy has a page spread detailing their life.

Why the Pairing: Reading the fictional series, it's interesting then to read about real spies. You can see differences in operations, but also lots of similarities.  Plus, spies are so much fun to read about.

Welcome to a new posting. In the library world, we talk about Book Pairings all the time. There are libraries that bundle fiction and nonfiction books on the same subject together for check-out.

In this case, these are two recent nonfiction books that I read:

I read Give Us the Vote first, which really helped me when I read Stamped a few days later.

I knew what Jason Reynolds was referring to in terms of voter suppression and more because I had just finished this book. I was happy I had the extra knowledge that was fleshed out a little bit more. 

These two books both deal with race and anti-racism. They are both excellent reads.
