BEA Books Part 2

Last week I was at BEA for three days. Here are some of the books I picked up. Most of these will be used for summer reading prizes. Many of these I will order for the library. Some of these you'll see being talked about here on the blog because they look really good and I'm excited to read them.

Yesterday I shared the YA and Middle Grade and Graphic Novels, today I'll share the kids and adult books.

Kids:
I really loved Maiden and Princess.
I'm so looking forward to more Bruce books, my patrons at the library love them too.

These look cute.

I'm a sucker for Christmas books, looking forward to reading these!

These look cute. I'm also a sucker for dog books.

Adult:
I can't wait to read these. And that cover for the Princess Plan is stunning!

I grabbed these for the library, I know readers who will be thrilled!

BEA Recap in Photos

Last week was Book Expo America - or in other words, bookmania.

On Wednesday after arriving in New York, I attended two events.

Novl Tea at Little Brown.

And the SLJ Librarians' Dinner, which I don't have any pictures from, but it was lots of fun with CT Librarian friends and amazing authors. Also they signed books, meaning I didn't have to wait in line for them the next day.

Thursday and Friday were both packed full of authors, books, and bookish people. The pictures are not in any real order.

Ryan T. Higgins signing Bruce's Big Move. I love this picture book series. Santa Bruce comes out later this fall.

Jen Calonita signing Misfits, the spin-off series of Fairy Tale Reform School

Tony DiTerlizzi signing posters of The Broken Ornament, which comes out later this fall.

Jarrett J. Krosoczka signing Hey, Kiddo - his graphic novel memoir which is sad, but really really good. Also David Levithan, his editor, is there too.

The Queen with her corgis - just hanging out in the Scholastic Booth - promoting Spy Kids.

Shannon and Dean Hale signing Princess in Black and the Science Fair Scare

Jordan Matter signing his Born to Dance book, I love these pictures. He confessed that the real book is even better because they had to change some things around.

Brad Meltzer and Chris Eliopoulous signing I am Neil Armstrong.

Eoin Colfer signing Artemis Fowl (soon to be a movie)

Martina McBride signing a picture for her upcoming cookbook.

Jan Brett signing her newest book Snowy Nap. They handed out bags to match the cover of the book. So cute!

Mark Crilley drawing me a picture in his new drawing book

Brigid Kemmerer signing her upcoming book a Curse So Dark and Lonely

Spy School series stand.

Hanging out with Brad Meltzer again.

Also I met my #otspsecretsister that I'm gifting this time around!
Check us out on her Instagram page.

So there you have it, three days of fun in pictures.
Stay tuned for more about the books.

BEA Advice (2)

Last year I ran a series of advice on things I learned from attending Book Expo America and this year I'll add to it. I"m still waiting to hear if I can go from my boss. But I'm hoping to go.

While the PW BEA 14: Galleys to Grab came out, it looks like you have to be a subscriber now to read it online (which doesn't help you unless you library subscribes - luckily mine does.) So, I'll tell you what. I'll read it and report back!

While you're thinking about books, also think about the people in the booths
Do you know them?
Have they sent your books?
Do you follow them on twitter?

Say hello and ask them about their favorite upcoming books. Get the conversation started, you never know where it's going to lead.

BEA Advice: (1)

Last year I ran a series of advice on things I learned from attending Book Expo America and this year I'll add to it. I"m still waiting to hear if I can go from my boss. But I'm hoping to go.

Planning never works out exactly, but it's good to have a general idea. There are people who will wait in line for 2 hours to see that one person they want to see. So when you walk over there 20 minutes before the signing, the line might be out of control. Be prepared for that, because it's GOING to happen. So have a couple back-up ideas instead of just wondering around aimlessly (although that can be good too)

Luckily, Nicole Brinkley created something fabulous for the YA people...and she shared it on Twitter.

ICYMI, I compiled a mass list of all the events announced so far at BEA. Good morning.

Getting Ready for BEA: part 1

Now that BEA is officially here, the excitement is starting to grow! I'm so excited to talk with everyone about books and to meet new and old friends! I'll be sharing my tips each week until the big event!

If this is your first time going, I have a few tips for you:

Start planning. Usually, some of my plans go out the window long before I leave BEA because I just can't get to everything. But it's great to have a plan and for the most part it works.

Try to plan:
Publishers you want to to with (names of contacts)
Books you want to talk to publishers about
ARCs you're interested in picking up
Authors you want to meet at their signings
Bloogers/Librarians you want to meet

Now's a great time to book checking on, creating, or printing more business cards. Lots of librarians/bloggers exchange cards during meetings in line. Make sure it as all your important information, plus if your a blogger, your blog logo. People might not recognize your name, but they could be readers of your blog.

See you next week for more tips!
