Tween Tuesday Review: Comeback

 * Book 15 in the Canterwood Crest series*
**Tween Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted at GreenBeanTeenQueen to highlight great reads for tweens. Join the fun! **

Lauren and Khloe have been having doubts about their relationship. They've both gone to their mutual friend Lexa for advice. Lexa makes them sit in a room and share their feelings. She's not letting them out until they solve their issues. Lauren and Khloe start talking, seriously talking about the things that hurt them and explanations of their past events. Together they make sense of the situation and swear not to jump to conclusions and jeopardize their friendship again.
Now, Lauren needs to start focusing on the upcoming show. Now that she has her school work under control and her friendships sorted out, she needs to spend quality time with Whisper.  Will she and Whisper be ready for their first event together?

My Thoughts: I'm addicted to this series. I love the moments between Whisper and Lauren. I really like reading about their time together before class. I enjoy reading about the classes. It makes me want to go horseback riding myself! I find their time together fascinating.
I love the friendship drama and seeing the girls become closer. I like the moments between Drew and Lauren - they're sweet. I'm happy to see Lauren regaining her confidence and taking a new stand at what it means to compete with horses.

SLJ SummerTeen Celebration of YA Books: Wrap up

On Thursday several YA Librarians and I met at the Willimantic Service Center to participate in the celebration. It was great meeting with friends and talking about how are summer went (most of the SRPs are over). Plus it was great to hear about forthcoming titles and hear authors talk about their works, their thoughts, and their views on the market.

It was a virtual conference, which was really neat, but different with so many of us. We voted on the webinars we wanted to watch. I'm really looking forward to viewing the rest next week when they're archived.

Caroline B Cooney spoke first, as the keynote speaker. She was fabulous. She talked about her inspiration to the Janie books - and how her readers contacted her demanding certain plot points. Janie Face to Face comes out early next year. From her talk, I'm going to have to read the previous books so I can be ready in January. She also shared her favorite librarian story!

Next we listened to Who Will Mend The Broken Heart with Earl Sewell, Lurlene McDaniel, Miranda Kenneally and Katie Kacvinsky - moderated by Terri Clark.

Katie Kacvinsky spoke first sharing a high school memory when her teacher asked about love at first sight. She remembers two girls and their answers. Their answers along with her beliefs help her write about relationships that take time and work to create love. I'm adding her books to my TRB list

Lurlene McDaniel spoke about her views on the ultimate villain - death. Love can overcome death. She talked about how her life changed when her son became very ill - which shaped her writing. She also loves the topic of heart transplant. She has a new series coming out this fall about the definitions of love starting with Year of Luminous Love. She'll be updating her website with a brand new look to coincide to the book's release. I borrowed tons of her books from my high school BFF. I devoured them and was always happy when she had a new one!

Earl Sewell spoke about his unique writing approach - to teen romances written in the voice of a teen girl. His teen daughter helps him write authentically, but he jokes that he also channels his inner 16 year old girl too. He also does his research - reading Cosmo and teen magazines and social networking sites. He writes fiction that gives his readers a lot to think about and testing relationships to see if they're strong enough. I need to add his books to my TBR list.

Miranda Kenneally wanted to read more contemporary YA novels growing up. She was always changing herself to fit the guy she was crushing over. She feels badly now that she missed out on not being herself and other opportunities that came her way. She hopes that her books reflect her feelings and teens learn to be themselves. I can't wait to read her upcoming books!

In Classic Twists, the presenters were Marissa Meyers, Sean Michael Wilson, and Gareth Hinds - moderated by Leslie Bermel. Each presenter showcased their novels.

Marissa Meyers's Lunar Chronicles will have four titles: Scarlet (Red Riding Hood), Crest (Rapunzel), and Winter (Snow White). She fell into writing through fan-fiction for Sailor Moon - where teen princesses were always the main characters. I'll on the lookout for the other lunar Chronicles books

Sean Michael Wilson spoke about adapting classics in graphic novels. He showed pages of his work and talked about the art. He lives in Japan, but he's Scottish. He talked a little bit about working for books for Japan, the UK, and the US and the differences in styles. I must get some of these books for the library.

Gareth Hinds talked about working on his dream project - The Odyssey as well as his other books. He spoke about adapting Shakespeare in graphic novel form and how well it works out as Shakespeare adapts to the format as it's a work meant primarily to been seen.  I must get some of these books for the library.

In Rockin' Women of YA, we heard from Maggie Stiefvater, A.S. King, Jackie Kessler, and Nina LaCour.  They were moderated by Betsy Bird. This portion was different as it was done as a webcast. Betsy asked questions and each author responded.

All in all, there were lots of great titles shared. Many I will be adding to the library collection and several I will be reading myself. I love talking about Teen Literature!

Review: Girl in the Steel Corset

Finley Jayne isn't normal; she has something dark inside her. Something that lets her heal faster. Something that lets her use more strength than she should possess. Something that gets her into trouble at times.

When the son of her employer starts to make moves on her, she rebuffs him once. When he keeps pushing the issue, she knocks him unconscious.  She flees the scene, knowing that she'll never get a reference.

As she's running down the street, she comes in contact with a vehicle. Griffin King is behind the wheel and the Duke takes her in. He can see the darkness within her, but he's not scared. He's the leader of a band of misfits and he thinks Finley will fit in perfectly.

Plus, he's in danger himself. Someone and something is coming after him. Griffin will need everyone around him to help him. There's something about Finley's eyes, something he can't turn away from.Could he be able to help her?

My Thoughts: I devoured this book, hungry for more. I hope there's plenty planned in this series. I just adored the steampunk angle. I love Victorian London. The setting was perfect. The machines fit in perfectly with the story, allowing for a fantastic blend of history and science fiction.
I enjoyed the two sides of Finely - the normal side and the side where she doesn't take crap from anyone. Griffin is the perfect male hero, dark and brooding but sweet. I adored Emily. I liked her tentative friendship with Finely. I admired her brains and her mechanical abilities. I liked Sam, but it did take me some time to come around to him. I liked Jasper.  I came to love this band of misfits and I can't wait to read many more books in this series!

Library Program: Connecticut Ghost Hunters

Following the summer reading theme of night, I devised the programs into weeks (dreams, monsters, night, ghosts, and vampires). I asked Connecticut Ghost Hunters to come to the library for a presentation after seeing their website.

I loved their presentation and it might have been my favorite program of the summer!

They shared their knowledge and experience. There was laughter and a little spookiness.
They brought equipment and talked about each piece.

They talked about types of paranormal phenomenon

They spoke about their experiences visiting haunted places in Connecticut including Norwich hospital and they shared clips of their recordings.

Then we ate dessert!

Mysterious Saturday Review: Grace Among Thieves

*3rd book in the Manor House Mystery series*

Grace has a great idea to bring in more patrons to the manor house - she's allowed a film crew to make a commemorative DVD of the manor. She wants to beef up the gift shop.

However, since the film crew's been at the manor house, a few items have gone missing. Grace shifted the shooting time to earlier in the day in an attempt to strengthen security.

When she hears from a friend that her museum's missing items, Grace begins to suspect there's something more to the picture. When a girl from a tour group winds up dead and an man shot in the shoulder, Grace believes the incidents might be related.

Can she figure out what's really going on or will someone stop her from trying?

My Thoughts: I find this series fascinating. I love the setting and Grace's job. I love her roommates - they're super supportive and very funny.  I found this addition to the series haunting, but wonderful. I devoured this book. I admire Grace for her beliefs, her strength, and her sense of fun. My heart broke for her at times during this book, but I can't wait to see how she rises!

Cover Thoughts: Charming, that chair looks like the perfect place to read.

Review: Endlessly

*3rd and final book in the trilogy*

Evie learns that the paranormals expect her to create a gate through which they can leave the human world forever. Evie's not sure she has the ability nor the desire to create the gate.

Not all the paranormals want to leave -including the Dark Queen. When she kidnaps Evie's boyfriend, Evie snaps into action. She teams up with Reth and Jack to travel to the faerie world.

What she sees in the faerie world greatly disturbs her. With great difficulty, she rescues Lend and returns home. However, there's a curse on Lend; he and Evie can't be in the same room without him falling into a deep sleep.

With time running out, she makes her decision. Can she save the life she so desperately desires?

My Thoughts: I BLEEPING love this series. I love Evie - for her fashion sense, her snark, and her loyalty. I really like her relationship with Lend - they're perfect together.  I really enjoy the banter between Evie and Reth and Evie and Jack - it's snark, funny, and charming. I like how Evie desires a normal life, filled with everyday teenage emotions and ideas - like lockers and dances. She wants to fit in both worlds, but she desperately wants to be normal. Her quirks made me laugh. She would be great to hang out with! While I'm sad the series ended, I thought the ending was perfect.

Teen Review Thursday

Here's what some of the teens at the Otis Library have been reading this summer:

My Big Nose and Other Natural Disasters
Ashley
Sydney Salter's book, My Big Nose and Other Natural Disasters, can be related to teenagers today who deal with self image problems and insecurities. The main character must overcome common obstacles in a average 17 year olds life, boy-problems, school, and friendship. Nobody is perfect and Sydney Salter shows this. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and recommend it to teenagers.

My Soul To Take
Cheyenne
My Soul To Take is a wonderful book, drawing old legends into the modern day world, showing that not everything is as it seems. Not everybody is the same, and some things should be better left untold. Others facts, however, are crucial to saving someone's life, even if it's your best friend's or your cousins. Recommended for a light, quick, easy read.

Ranger's Apprentice: The Ruins of Gorlan
Julia
A book about an orphaned boy named Will whose accepted into the Mysterious Ranger Corps, A group that the commen folk belive practice the dark arts. Pick up this book today to follow Will in his first adventure.

New Moon
Sariah
This book is great. I love the vampire werewolf theme and I especially love the fact that Bella has to chose between Edward and Jacob. Its like a every day situation of loving two people and only choosing one.I have to say that Stephanie Meyers is a fabulous author. She puts the fun in reading.

New Moon
Tasbiha
New moon is very nice book. Its too addictive. It gets more and more interesting as we read through. It's heart breaking romance and suspenseful action didn't let me put the book down. I LOVED THE BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!
