Tween Tuesday Review: Kidnapped series

The Falconers have been through enough - the parents have been finally declared innocent thanks to Aiden and Meg. They're trying to adjust to normal life. It's hard going to school and paying attention in class when you've been on the run for so long.

Then just as their getting settled, Meg gets kidnapped on her way home from school. Now she's alone, struggling to get free. It was better when she had Aiden by her side. Maybe she can think of something to catch his notice so he can rescue her.

Aiden feels like he's lost a limb. He hates the thought of Meg being out there by herself. He's determined to help the FBI find and rescue his sister...if it's the last thing he does.

My Thoughts: I'm so happy there's more to Aiden and Meg's story. I love their loyalty to each other, their use of the crazy antics from their father's detective books, and their courage. This series picks up after On the Run and it's full of the same action and danger as the previous series. I love the plot twists and turns. I love the impact the weather has on the story. A fabulous tween series.

Cover Thoughts: Very action oriented

Tween Tuesday Review: Titanic series

Paddy never thought he'd be aboard the Titanic, but after a run-in with a gang where his brother goes missing (possibly murdered), he finds himself seeking safe passage. As a stow-away, he learns the layout of the ship and attempts to steer clear of everyone. It doesn't work.

He meets a steward - who lied about his age to work aboard the same ship as his father. When Paddy hears Alfie's secret, he blackmails the boy into helping him. Alfie befriends two of his charges: Sophie (who's mother's a well known suffragette and Julianna (who's father gambles excessively).  The four roam about the ship, helping each other out of tight situations, and uncovering the identity of Jack the Ripper.

Their lives change forever when the ship hits the iceberg. They pull together to save themselves and each other, but out of  2228 people, only 705 survived.

My Thoughts: We read the first book for a 4th and 5th grade book club - everyone liked it. I felt like I needed to read the rest and find out what happened! They're fast paced books with the usual action, danger, and adventure from Gordon Korman. I really like how he wrote in facts about Votes for Woman and Jack the Ripper. I thought the beginning where Daniel figured out everything was interesting - very smart. I liked the twists and turns of the novel - but obviously knowing where the novel would end up due to history.

Cover Thoughts: I love how they connect.

Tween Tuesday Review: Lawless

M. Freeman knows nothing about her parents' past, but she's about to find out. Her father was a legend at the Lawless School - where she just had an interview.

When she accepts the position, she unknowingly sets pieces into motion. Upon her arrival, she makes a grand entrance. She's different from the other students - she's been trained for this her whole life with homeschooling but she knows nothing about the school history.

Now M has a chance to join the society her father created - the Masters. In order to be accepted, she must plan and pull off a heist. There's only one target she wants to acquire - the takeaway Rembrandt but does she have the skills to make her one of them?

My Thoughts: I'm a sucker for heist books and I'm so happy this is the first of a new series. I love that it combined boarding school with art and heists. I love books that make me look up things (like the Takeaway Rembrandt). I enjoyed the plot twists, not knowing which characters to trust, and the games played at the school. I liked unraveling M's family history along with her and understanding more about the school. Already looking forward to the next book in the series!

Cover Thoughts: I love it! I love how there's a different photo on the back.

Tween Tuesday Review: Jealousy

 *  Canterwood Crest Series #17 *

**Tween Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted at GreenBeanTeenQueen to highlight great reads for tweens. Join the fun! **

LT had the surprise of her life at her masquerade birthday bash when an old friend from home showed up. LT wasn't expecting her ex-boyfriend. She certainly wasn't expecting to hear that he's a new student at Canterwood Crest.

Even though they broke up, Taylor and LT have done their best to remain friends. LT doesn't want to that to change, but neither does she want to make her new relationship with Drew strained.

On top of all her relationship drama, she's dealing the pressure of Parents Weekend, horse lessons, Khloe's play, and her own performance. Can't a girl catch a drama free moment?

My Thoughts: I adore this series, it's fresh, funny, and full of relationship and friendship drama. The last book ended on a wicked cliff hanger as does this book. While this installment of the addictive series centers around boy drama, LT and Khloe have their bonding moments. I love how loyal these girls are to each other and how their friendship has become so close in such a short time.  I can't wait to see what happens next when LT's worlds collide.

Cover Thoughts: Charming - as usual

Tween Tuesday Review: Swindle

**Tween Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted at GreenBeanTeenQueen to highlight great reads for tweens. Join the fun! **

Griffin always has a plan. He wants to use the land from the house being destroyed for a skate park. However, everyone refused to let him speak. Now in a last ditch effort, he's invited his whole class to sleep over at the house. Only his best friend shows up.

The night isn't a total loss as Griffin finds an old Babe Ruth card hidden inside a desk. He hopes that this card could be the answer to his parents' money troubles. He takes the card to a local shop where the man gives him $20.

Later, he sees the man on TV raving about this rare baseball card. Immediately Griffin knows that he's been swindled. He's not about to let that stop him. He comes up with a plan to steal back his baseball card.

My Thoughts: I LOVED this book. I'm a huge Gordon Korman fan. I read this for our 4th and 5th grade book club at the library. I loved the action, the danger, the heist, and the characters. I like how Gordon Korman writes about kids standing up for their rights and often taking matters into their own hands. I loved Griffin and his plans. I was impressed by how he assembled his team. You can't go wrong with Gordon Korman, all of our book club kids love him. I'm eagerly awaiting my turn at the second book in the series.

Tween Tuesday Review: Double Vision

Linc always gets into trouble; he just can't help himself. On a field trip to a farm, he has an incident with the chickens. Not only is the video posted all over YouTube, but the farmer's threatening to sue his parents for damages.

Help arrives in a strange way, government agents want Linc to do a job for them. If he does, without catastrophe and without telling his parents, the lawsuit will disappear. Linc realizes he has no choice.

He's a dead ringer for a secret agent, Benjamin Green. Benjamin's gone missing, but he's needed to exchange a painting in France. Linc's taken to France, has his hair died, and given a set of instructions.

Of course, things don't go according to plan, but Linc's not about to let that stop him. He has to save his family and his new friend.

My Thoughts:  I really like Linc. He tries hard, but he just can't help doing things that get him into trouble. He's amusing. I liked Francoise and how she's trying hard to save her own family. I liked how they worked together, figuring out the clues her father left behind. I found Henry's role a little unbelievable, but he was the loveable side-kick. With the danger, the action, and the mystery, it's a great book for tween readers craving action.

Tween Tuesday Review: Spy Princess

**Tween Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted at GreenBeanTeenQueen to highlight great reads for tweens. Join the fun! **

Lady Lilah lives the life of a princess, but it's not the life she wants. Lilah craves adventure. She rustles up some boy clothing and leaves her normal quiet life for a night.

There in the village, she finds a moment of freedom. The freedom calls to her. However, in order to assume her new identity, she must make choices. The townspeople are unhappy with the King. They want to rebel against him.

Lilah notices her own brother is in league with the leader of the rebellion. Soon Lilah will be forced to make choices of her own. Will she join the rebels against her own family? Would she be able to share her true identity among her new friends? Would she resort to violence?
The rebellion comes sooner than expected and nothing goes as planned. Will Lady Lilah be able to help or will she be stuck on the sidelines?

My Thoughts: The title and the cover caught my eye. I love stories about Princesses and spies. Even better if the spy is a princess. Lilah intrigued me, Her life wasn't perfect. She didn't like her uncle, the King. However, it wasn't until she needed an adventure that she begin to understand the plight of the common good. At first, it was about escape and freedom. Soon it became more about what's best for the common good. In a world of upheaval, it's hard for kids to make a difference. I thoroughly enjoyed the first part of the book and the third part. I had mixed feelings about the second part of the book - where magic came into play. While I liked the spy games, I disliked the magical elements, even though they were necessary. I didn't mind the mages, but the flying seemed strange and out of place. I wonder from the second Princess in hiding if there's a sequel in the works. Still I think tweens looking for an adventure story with a little magic, plenty of action, and lots of fun will enjoy this read.

Tween Tuesday: Winning Team

 * Go-for-Gold Gymnasts Series #1*

**Tween Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted at GreenBeanTeenQueen to highlight great reads for tweens. Join the fun! **

Britt was an amazing gymnast in Ohio. Her parents moved to Texas so she could train at an elite team and continue her dream of becoming a gymnastic super star.

Britt walks into a gym where three girls already have a tight friendship. They're not sure they want another gymnast. Britt attempts a prank, which backfires. She attempts to be funny, which backfires. The last straw for Britt might be breaking someone's confidence.

Britt's walking a fine line, trying to be the best gymnast while trying to fit in. In the Elite group, can you have both?

My Thoughts: I like the start of this new series, especially since one of the authors is an Olympic medalist.  I remember watching her as a young girl and being in amazed by her! To me, this read like a tween version of the ABC Family show Make It or Break It. I liked learning more about gymnastics. Some of Britt's actions were cringe-worthy  but I also felt bad for her. It's hard to break into an existing friendship. Although I did admire her courage for breaking the confidence of the only girl who  liked her. I'm curious to see where this series will go.

Tween Tuesday Review: Masquerade

**Tween Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted at GreenBeanTeenQueen to highlight great reads for tweens. Join the fun! **

* #16 in the Canterwood Crest Series*

Lauren can't wait to turn 13 on Halloween. Not only is it her favorite time of year, but she'll finally be a teen. Plus Khloe and their friends are planning a massively awesome party. Lauren and Khloe decide to make the party glam by creating a formal masquerade.

Before the night of the big party, LT has to finish her first competitive horse showing with Whisper, continue working hard during lessons, keep up with her studies, start running with Drew, and have time for a little bit of fun.

She also has a secret wish for her birthday - a kiss from a certain boy. Will her birthday wish be granted?

My Thoughts: Holy Cliff Hanger Ending!  I'm addicted to this series for the drama, the friendship, the horses, and small doses of romance. I love how Khloe plans the party, with LT knowing some details, but also surprised her with others. I love the idea of the party. Mostly, I just love the characters, including the horses, and following their lives. I can't wait to read the next installment!

Tween Tuesday Review:Girl Games

**Tween Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted at GreenBeanTeenQueen to highlight great reads for tweens. Join the fun! **

Artemis is so excited. Since the girls were not allowed to compete in the Olympic Games, they're hosting their own special games. The Girl Games are here!  Artemis has many last minute tasks to complete before the competition can start and she wants to make sure these games are perfect!

The visiting athletes are here to win, even going so far as to taunt their competition. The Goddess Girls need to bring their A games to these Olympics. However, thoughts about boys, feuding over a kitten, and getting into trouble with Zeus all hinder their training. Will the Girl Games come together at the last moment and will the Goddess Girls medal?

My Thoughts: The first super special and the first book in the series with multiple perspectives. I loved seeing the viewpoints of all the goddess girls. Of course, I LOVE the idea of the Girl Games. The goddess boys were very supportive helping the girls train, as the girls helped them train. I liked the girl touches to the games - the pink sand and the stuffed animals for the relay baton. These little touches helped make the games unique and girly. I loved the celebration of girls and sports as well as the combination of athletics and girly.

Cover Thoughts: I like it!

Tween Tuesday Review: Bliss

**Tween Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted at GreenBeanTeenQueen to highlight great reads for tweens. Join the fun! **

Rose's parents own a bakery. It's not an ordinary bakery. They follow recipes from the Bliss Cookery Booke - which includes magical ingredients. The recipes are written in story format. Best of all, the goodies make people happy.

Rose's excited at the idea of baking with magic. When will her parents allow her to really help in the family business? She's getting tired of waiting.

Then her parents are called away on an important mission. They give Rose a key to secret room, where they keep the cookbook. Rose is under strict instructions NOT to use the book. She promises, but things get out of hand when Aunt Lily appears.

Rose has never heard of Aunt Lily, but soon she becomes part of the family.  Rose's brothers want to experiment with the book. They convince Rose to copy out a few recipes and try them. The results are a disaster. Each recipe they try, they just make it worse. Can they fix things before their parents come home?

My Thoughts: A magical bakery = sold. I loved this idea and really enjoyed reading this one. I loved the magical elements to the story - the secret ingredients, the secret rooms, the cookbook made from stories. I enjoyed the squabbling between Rose and her brothers, but liked how they pulled together. The small town feel of the this book made it more delightful. Everyone knew everyone's business, which made their bad behavior more amusing.  I loved the descriptions of the librarians fighting, the girls going crazy over Ty, and the disco party.  I'm so interested to see where this series will continue after the cliff hanger ending!

Cover Thoughts: Great, it made me want to read the book. Plus I love the wrap around cover!

Tween Tuesday Review: Time Traveling Fashionista at the Palace of Marie Antoinette

* book 2 in the Time Traveling Fashionista series. Read my review for this first book*

**Tween Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted at GreenBeanTeenQueen to highlight great reads for tweens. Join the fun! **

Louise's father just lost his job. With money a concern, Louise won't be going to France with her classmates. She's bitterly disappointed.

A vintage sale cheers her up some, even though it's hard not telling her best friend about the sale. It's been even harder not telling her best friend about her adventure aboard the Titanic.

As Louise looks through clothes, she spies the most amazing dress. She's not supposed to try it on, but she ducks into a dressing room with it. Immediately she's transported to France - to the court of Marie Antoinette.

At first, she likes the parties and the elaborate gowns. Soon she comes to remember that something bad happens to the young Princess. Louise attempts to steer the Princess in a different path. Can she leave France before the revolution starts?

My Thoughts: I liked the time travel concept through vintage clothes. I like how Louise made it to France, just not the time she intended to go. I like meeting Marie Antoinette and seeing her world from an outsider's perspective. She had so much pressure on her and so little knowledge of the world. I love how each stop in history leaves a mark on Louise and how she'll never forget those moments. I loved the information Louise discovers about time travel and I'm so interested to see how that ties into the next book!

I can't wait to see the final copy of the book complete with color illustrations.

Lauren and Khloe have been having doubts about their relationship. They've both gone to their mutual friend Lexa for advice. Lexa makes them sit in a room and share their feelings. She's not letting them out until they solve their issues. Lauren and Khloe start talking, seriously talking about the things that hurt them and explanations of their past events. Together they make sense of the situation and swear not to jump to conclusions and jeopardize their friendship again.
Now, Lauren needs to start focusing on the upcoming show. Now that she has her school work under control and her friendships sorted out, she needs to spend quality time with Whisper.  Will she and Whisper be ready for their first event together?

My Thoughts: I'm addicted to this series. I love the moments between Whisper and Lauren. I really like reading about their time together before class. I enjoy reading about the classes. It makes me want to go horseback riding myself! I find their time together fascinating.
I love the friendship drama and seeing the girls become closer. I like the moments between Drew and Lauren - they're sweet. I'm happy to see Lauren regaining her confidence and taking a new stand at what it means to compete with horses.

Tween Tuesday Review: Madhattan Mystery

**Tween Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted at GreenBeanTeenQueen to highlight great reads for tweens. Join the fun! **

Lexi and her brother Kevin are spending time in Manhattan while their father and his new wife enjoy a honeymoon. Lexi's not happy about her new family life and she's not thrilled to be in New York City.

On the first night there, Lexi eavesdrops in the Whispering Gallery. She hears two men talking an abandoned train station, jewels, and a buried body. At first, she thinks little of it. Then she reads the morning's headline: CLEOPATRA'S JEWELS VANISH.

Lexi and Kevin meet Kim - who lives in her aunt's building. Together the three of them start talking about the jewels. Kim convinces Lexi to call the police with her information. After the police scoff at them, they decide to look for the jewels themselves following the clues that Lexi overheard.

My Thoughts: I really liked this one! I loved how Bonk wove unique parts of the city with tourist attractions. I liked reading about Central Park, the MET, and Grand Central Station. The underground abandoned tunnels were fascinating.

I liked how homelessness was woven into the story and the moments between Lexi and Melrose. I really liked Kim - she was smart and snarky. I liked how they all came together to figure out what really happened to the jewels.

Cover Thoughts: Awesome!
Source: Inter-library Loan (although an email from the author tipped me off to it). And it's one I'm going to get for our collection.

Fun Fact: Lexi and Kevin are from Cold Spring, NY - which is the town my father grew up in! Pretty cool to see that in a book. It definitely made me smile.

Tween Tuesday Review: Fairest of All

 * first in a new series*

**Tween Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted at GreenBeanTeenQueen to highlight great reads for tweens. Join the fun! **

Abby was awoken in the middle of the night by her brother who insists there's something strange happening in the basement. When she goes down with him to check it out, they're transported to a forest.
After walking some distance, they stumble upon an old woman. After an unhelpful exchange with the woman, they decide to follow her. She leads them to a cottage, where she attempts to give a girl an apple.
Immediately, Abby understands. She's landed in the middle of Snow White's fairy tale. She foils the witch's plan. However, she soon realizes that she's foiled Snow White's life as the prince will never find her in the cottage. Abby vows to make things right for Snow White.

My Thoughts: I liked this twist on Fairy Tales. I really enjoyed watching Abby and her brother try to figure out a way to help Snow White, who wasn't exactly interested in following her life according to plan. I loved the ending of this tale and I'm curious to see what other fairy tales Abby drops in to.

Tween Tuesday Review: Infinity Ring

 * comes out August 28th *

**Tween Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted at GreenBeanTeenQueen to highlight great reads for tweens. Join the fun! **

Dak and Sara are best friends. Dak's a history geek and Sara loves anything science related. When they get the chance to break into Dak's parent's lab, they find a ring. The ring allows people to travel through time.

Sara realizes that the ring is broken. It takes her all day to fix the ring. When Dak's parents return, they're dumbfounded to learn the ring now works. After a quick test of the ring, they can't wait to use it to start fixing the breaks in history, the moments gone wrong that have changed the world.

Unfortunately, they are not the only ones with knowledge of the ring and SQ (the reason behind all the breaks in history) also desires the ring. Just as people are training Sara and Dak how to use the ring and fix the breaks, the SQ infiltrate the building. Sara and Dak have no choice but to use the ring, along with a language specialist. They end up in 1492, where a mutiny is about to take place aboard Columbus's ship. Can they fix the break?

My Thoughts: If you like the 39 Clues series - don't miss this book! It's got lots of action and danger! I like the nerdiness of both Dak and Sara. I'm loving how more and more books have smart characters who are proud of their brains. I like the dynamic between Dak and the language expert -they act like brothers and are quite amusing with their banter.

As a history buff, I love reading about histories and alternative histories. I find it fascinating to read how the course of history might have changed due to a mutiny abroad Columbus's ships. The perfect blend of danger, humor, history, nerdiness, and action made me devour this book. I know the tweens in my library will devour this book just as quickly as I did and will also be asking for more.

Tween Tuesday Review: Medusa the Mean

 * the 8th book in the Goddess Girls series *

**Tween Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted at GreenBeanTeenQueen to highlight great reads for tweens. Join the fun! **

Medusa wishes she were immortal - like her sisters. Instead, she's a mortal with green skin and thanks to a spell gone wrong snakes instead of hair. Medusa also believes in telling the truth. She doesn't think about the consequences of hurt feelings.

As a result, she doesn't have a lot of friends. She'd love to hang out with Athena, Aphrodite, Persephone, and Artemis. Being one of the only immortals at the school and not connected with a god/goddess, she's insecure. Could the Goddess Girls really want to be her friends? She has so many secrets, she's not sure if she has time for friends, but she's also lonely.

With Zeus and Hera's wedding coming up, Medusa might have a chance to be in the wedding. She only wants to walk down the aisle next to Poseidon, her secret crush. Could she win his contest and gain his attention? All her hopes and wishes just might be in reach with the purchase of a necklace. Will all her wishes come true?

My Thoughts: I love this series! The series changed course with Medusa as a new narrator. I liked seeing the softer side of her and reasons for her abruptness form the previous books. Her sisters are horrible to her simply because they're goddesses and she's not. Thus Medusa feels insecure most of the time. She doesn't believe that anyone would be nice to her.  Medusa spends the bulk of her time studying, which keeps her away from social activities. A great addition to a fabulous series. I look forward to learning more about Medusa and hope to see her blossom more.

Kate's happy to be back riding horses and living with her friend. She doesn't mind helping Holly get around the house. She's excited about Holly's future and her ability to ride horses again. After an accident leaves Holly's mom on crutches, Kate takes over more responsibility in the barn. Things aren't going well as notes turn up missing, a fire starts in the barn, and a horse goes out of control. Both Holly and Kate know Angela's behind these pranks making Kate look bad, but without proof, they can't do anything.

Will these incidents all add up to major trouble for Kate?

My Thoughts: I tore through this sequel, loving the new horse that comes to the barn that's a bit of handful. I love how Kate tries to tame him with Lifesavers!  I love reading about the horses and their quirks. I think Jennifer will be an interesting addition to the stable. The drama between the riders kept me turning the pages as I had to find out what happened. The news at the end makes me eager to read the next book in this fun series.

Cover Thoughts: Cool - I like the horse running.

Tween Tuesday Review: Blowout

** Tween Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted at GreenBeanTeenQueen to highlight great reads for tweens. Join the fun!  **

Mickey loves her mother's salon. She's dreamed of working there and now on her 13th birthday, her dreams are coming true. She's going to be responsible for sweeping up the hair on the floor and making sure the stations are set.
When she meets two girls at school waiting to get haircuts, she attempts to befriend them. Mickey wants to be liked so she shares gossip with the girls and gives them an extra bottle of nail polish each. She doesn't realize that by spreading gossip she might hurt one of the stylist's career. Nor does she think the salon will miss the nail polish until someone takes inventory.
Mickey desperately wants to keep her new job. Will she confess her crimes and help right her wrongs?

My Thoughts: The first book in a new series. I liked reading about Mickey's job in the beauty salon. She had great instincts when it came to accessories.  I thought her mom was a little hard on her at times.

I loved how Mickey's best friend was Jonah and that they played video games and hung out together. I liked how Mickey tried to branch out and gain some friends who were girls. Although, at times it backfired.

Mickey had great intentions, but most of the time things didn't work out according to plan, which was fun to read!

Tween Tuesday Review: Abduction

*Abduction is a first book in a new series that occurs AFTER On The Run series. *

** Tween Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted at GreenBeanTeenQueen to highlight great reads for tweens. Join the fun!  **

Aidan and Meg are trying to put their lives back together. It's hard sitting in a classroom when you're used to being on the run. Old habits die hard. Plus no one understands - most of their former friends still believe their family are traitors.

Coming home from school one day, they see a van. Within moments, Meg is drugged and tossed into the van. Aidan can't help her.

Their old nemesis FBI Agent Harris appears at their house. With the family name in the media again, it's clear that no one has sympathy for them. Aidan can't believe that he allowed the kidnapping to happen.

He's determined to find Meg and rescue her. After all they've been through together, he might be her only hope.

My Thoughts: I really enjoyed On the Run series and loved that Aidan and Meg's adventure continues.

At first I hated how the siblings were separated as they've been through so much together, but it's interesting to see them apart. Their minds are still connected. Meg knows how her brother thinks and how he will react to a potential clue.

I love how they both think outside the box and how they're strong and determined.

I love the action, the danger, and the crazy stunts. I'm so happy to read more about Meg and Aidan and how their lives have changed now that they've gone back to "normal".
