Happy Halloween

Yesterday we had our Halloween Storytime and Parade at the library.

It's one of my favorite days of the year!
I LOVE seeing all the costumes.
We don't get Trick or Treaters at our house, so it's fun to see kids at the library.

Here's the costume:

Can you guess the bookish character?

And for the actual day:

Do you dress up? What was your costume?

Review: Troubling Tonsils

Jasper Rabbit has bad news - he has to get his tonsils out. But he has a plan, he's going to put them in jar and save them for show and tell. When he goes in for the operation, his doctor discovers something strange....
My Thoughts: If you've read the Jasper Rabbit picture books, you'll want to read this one. It's a little creepy and a little silly, but also a lot of fun. Being so close to Halloween, it's the perfect time of year to read it.

Top Ten Tuesday: Books for Halloween

This week's topic is a Halloween Freebie. I'm not one for scary books, but here are some thrillers on my TBR that I didn't get to this year (yet).

Have you read any of these?

Picture Book Wednesday: Halloween Books (4)

Another Round of Halloween Picture Books

This picture book alternates between look and find and "information" about things that might scare you on Halloween

Zombees invade small town. How will everyone survive?

A clever twist on zombies in this cute rhyming picture book.

In the vein of Twas the Night before Christmas comes a baking story about monsters.

This is a sweet story that's not really a Halloween story, but the monsters make it work. This story is a gingerbread man tale about friendship.

No one on the beach wants a Halloween party. But each time the grown-ups try to force them off the beach, they have clever comeback. Will they get their wish?

While this is not a traditional Halloween story, this rhyming story is rather funny.

Board Books: Halloween (2)

A few more Halloween board books:

It's Halloween and five black cats are walking the streets. They find all sorts of mischief.

A delightful rhyming board book that's full of almost scary moments.

Grumpkin is a pumpkin that DOES NOT like Halloween!

He's so grumpy, it's rather funny. Things you imagine aren't always better; the twist at the end is cute.

This board book is a twist on If You're Happy and You Know it! And it's really fun.

The zoo is ready for Halloween and all the animals are participating!

This is a cute book with great photos of zoo animals combined with Halloween moments. The rhymes are fun and there are SO many pumpkins!

Picture Book Review: Halloween Books (3)

Just a few more Halloween books:

If you're a fan of the original book, you will enjoy this spin-off

I enjoyed how many of the letters have costumes. The ending was sweet.

A fresh spin on the Goldilocks story with a fun Halloween twist.

Beverley the bat is lonely. She's so happy when humans show up at the house. But they do not enjoy her welcome treats.

* While this isn't technically a Halloween books, it does work.

The cars aren't sure about a ride through a haunted graveyard. Someone might be a little scared, but the message is great.

It's Halloween and the monsters want to share their cake with the neighbors. They go door to door and learn about different holiday traditions (which are shared in the back of the book). A sweet community story

Picture Book Wednesday: Halloween Picture Books (2)

Just a few books to get you in the mood for Halloween!

For one little boy, Halloween is the best and the worst night of the year. He's counting down the sleeps. I love how this book incorporates so many Halloween ideas: haunted houses, scary movies, corn maze, picking out your costume, and all that CANDY!

I loved this book - it's cute and the illustrations are amazing. I love how the book gets closer to the house with every new day.

It's Halloween night and Hazel has the hiccups. Magic and hiccups do not mix! Hazel calls her friend to help but nothing they do can scare her enough. Will she ever get rid of them?

This rhyming book is simply adorable and perfect for Halloween.

What happens if you're too cute to be scary? She tries to find her Halloween self, but nothing she tries works.

She's stunned to find that everyone is delighted to see her at the Halloween party. And she realizes that she's perfect just the way she is.

One little girl is tired of being thought of as cute on Halloween. This year, she's decided to be a scary witch.

This is a fun story about changing up Halloween. Is there such a thing as too scary?

Middle Grade: Maxwell Dark Nightmare Hunter

* book 1 in a new graphic novel series *

Maxwell Dark helps people get rid of their nightmares. He must be in the room with them while they sleep, so they can dream walk together. Maxwell has ulterior motives; he's looking for his sister. He's drawn to a town where he meets Sid.

Her nightmares are wreaking havoc on her life. She's so tired. Maxwell wants to help her defeat her monsters so she can finally move on and rest. She's a little skeptic of him.
My Thoughts: While this isn't a Halloween graphic novel, it's perfect for this time of year with all the monsters. This was an interesting read and just a little bit creepy. I'm curious to see where the overall arch of the story will go. The monsters are holding on to some secrets.

Cover Thoughts: Great
Source: My Library
Library Recommendation: A great soft horror graphic novel for middle grade readers - highly recommended.

Board Books: Halloween

Just a few board books:

This is a cute board book that is reminiscent of This Little Piggy.

The illustrations are adorable, and the ending is sweet. This Little Monster is a fun board book to share.

** This book has slides

Not a real Halloween book, but it's about a ghost finding their voice. And of course, friendship.

Cat and Baby have their first Halloween together. The color palette of this board book is charming - filled with the colors or fall as they enjoy all the Halloween events.

Picture Book Review: Halloween Books

Here a few Halloween books that came late to the library last year:

When one little girl's Halloween plans are forced to change, she investigates what everyone else is doing before making her final plans.

I love how Janelle investigated everyone's plans and then created a plan for herself.  It was fun to see everyone's Halloween traditions. I loved how everything turned out.

It's the time of year when the wall between our world and the spirit world is at it's thinnest. Sam and his friends celebrate Samhain.

It's an interested look at a not-well known (to me) holiday. I liked the end note that talks about Samhain and it's connection to Halloween. There are also some spells at the back of the book.

Finn, a ghost, is scared to go out on Halloween and then misses his favorite candy. He's so sad that he decides that next Halloween he will join his family. He works hard all year to face his fears. He starts small and works up to bigger moments. Will he be able to go out?

This was a great book about all the scary things in the world and about facing your fears. There are setbacks and hard moments. But everyone has those. This book can be great for discussion about fears and how to work with them.

It's almost Halloween and there's so much to do to get ready for the big day!

What are your favorite Halloween traditions? This book covers them all with bright illustrations that readers will want to pour over.

This board book will get readers ready for Halloween.

This super cute book has soft charming illustrations and a fun cast of characters.

As nature starts to change and fall arrives, it's time to start prepping for Halloween. There's so much to do!

This was a charming Halloween story about all the built-up excitement about waiting for the day to arrive. The art is unique and fun to pour over.

** this book is much older, but it's new to me.
