Picture Book Review: Street Through Time

 

This nonfiction picture book is fascinating. It takes the same European street by the river and showcases it throughout time periods in history. It starts with settlements and you can see how things change but also stay the same. You can see the influence of other cultures. You can see how quickly things go poorly. I love how the illustrations look inside the buildings. (I like the puzzles that do this too). This is a book to pour over and notice all the little details. It might even spark some research questions. 

Picture Book Review: Shark Lady

Eugenie Clark became fascinated with sharks at the age of 9. She wanted to study them and prove they weren't as dangerous as everyone thought. 

A nonfiction picture book about a daring woman, perfect for feminist reading. I love that she didn't take no for an answer. I love that she searched out knowledge. Great for STEAM reading. Loved the illustrations. 

A fantastic book to pour over and share with others.

Picture Book Review: Barnum's Bones

A nonfiction picture book - perfect for dinosaur lovers.

Barnum's parents named him after a great man, hoping that he would do great things too.
Working as a paleontologist for the American Museum of Natural History, he had a knack for discovering bones - including the first remains of the T-Rex.

While this one is a longer picture book, it's great for older kids. Barnum's Bones captures the excitement of finding dinosaur bones - and their importance of understanding the past. 

Picture Book Review: Raindrops Roll

A nature nonfiction picture book on rain and the water cycle.

I loved this book - great photography that matches the text. The perfect book to uses in beginning to understand rain and water  - especially with the added information in the back of the book. I poured over these photographs, savoring them.

I found this book after reading Best in Snow and I hope more nature books are in the works. 

Get this one for both your public and school libraries!

Picture Book Review: Best in Snow

Celebrate the wonders of snow in the forest while explaining the water cycle.

My Thoughts: Gorgeous illustrations make this book a delight for readers as they learn about the science of snow. Not a lot of text, but it this book is perfect for sharing.

Upcoming Mini Review: Jars of Hope

This nonfiction picture book shares the story of Irena Sendler, who saved over two thousand children from Poland in World War II. Not only did she save them, but she kept records of their real names and their parents so they could be reunited after the war.

The Good:
Beautiful artwork and beautiful story make this book fantastic
It shows how one person can make a huge difference, very inspiring
The moment with the dog was charming.
The dark moments are handled well.
HOPE comes off the pages, even in the darkest moments.
Contains: Afterword, Author's Note, Glossary, and Source Notes

The Bad:
Nothing. It's a beautiful read.

My Thoughts:
I had never heard of this woman before, but now I want to know more and I'm thankful for this book.

Final Thoughts: A beautiful inspiring story that tugs at the heartstrings and makes me want to read more about this fascinating woman. Grab it for your library and classroom and share it!
