Board Books: New to the Library

Sometimes I try to create themes with my lists, this isn't one of those times. These are just fun new additions to the library.

Rob the penguin isn't happy that he's not colorful. He tries all the colors before realizing that he's great just the way that he is. A wonderful message for everyone. Great for vocabulary building with animals and colors. Plus, it's a touch a feel book, with different textures.

* this makes a great baby shower gift!

Sharing your love of sports with these board books. These rhyming board books are mini biographies but also teach lessons about working hard and being determined.

You are one but you're also part of a team. You're better together. A cute counting book with lovely illustrations and lots of hair styles, which you can also count.

Family time from morning until night - lots of diverse families and lots of activities. Of course, I love the moment they read all together. There's a mirror at the end of the book to share that the reader's family is also amazing! So much love and so many great messages in this one!

A sweet book between a parent and a child and unconditional love. This book has charming illustrations with flaps and sliders.

Lots of fun on the farm with different textures and questions to answer. It's not a story book, but there's a lot to discuss here - especially with the bright illustrations and pictures.

The firefighters roll through the town - performing their jobs. A fun adaptation with lots of noise. This one is sure to be a crowd pleaser! Perfect for storytimes.

If you're need to feeling calm, read this book over a cup of hot chocolate. The warmth of the colors only adds to the aesthetic of the book. A great book to start talking about emotions, breathing, and mental health.

Another mental health book - feel your feelings and slow down. Examine them. Acknowledge them. And let them go! There's a note for parents/caretakers at the end of the book.

Picture Book Wednesday: Literacy Board Books

It's almost back to school time.

Almost everything you do in the early years counts as literacy: singing, playing, crafting, talking, and reading. All of it adds up.

Here are some board books to jump start literacy:

There's nothing like opening up a new box of crayons and having ALL the possibilities before you. This is a book all about colors and drawing.

An alphabet book with textures, bright colors, and lots of vocabulary. This is an adorable book. It also makes a great baby shower gift!

A counting book featuring Bruce - the adorable grumpy bear and some animals from his books. They are all having fun, but he's still grumpy.  A great concept book with great vocabulary to share.

Art project ideas* in this textured book. So many bright colors and fun ideas here. It also makes a great baby shower gift!

* Crafting is a precursor to writing. You're practicing holding crayons or a paintbrush the way you would a pencil. You're making similar movements across paper. It's ALL helpful. Keep up the good work!

Board Books (11): Play

Just a few board books we purchased for the library.

Play is so important for kids - and it's a very important part of how they learn. The brain at such a young age is fascinating and fast. Repetition works wonders but so many fun activities are actually precursors to writing (which I didn't know until recently when I took a class on Early Literacy)

What's more fun than dancing? I love how this book explores different cultures through dance. And the illustrations are super cute!

This one is a little bit older, but still great. A father and daughter dance together. Pure joy!

A great introduction to sports through photographs and concepts. I like the layout of this book - it's simple yet conveys knowledge. And it's diverse.

* If you like this one, there are books on Football, Soccer, and Baseball!

This introduction to yoga talks about the poses, what they mean, and shows how to do them. It combines illustrations with photographs in a seamless way. And they are both diverse. Very clever and fantastic.

This book talks about colors and how to make colors, how to play with paint, and how to have fun crafting. It showcases a number of tools to use while painting - just like we do with our storytimes at the library.

Did you know that painting (and crafting) is a precursor to writing?

There are so many things to touch in this book and textures to talk about. It's interactive and there's so much to see. The illustrations are great as are the photographs. It's clever and easily one of my new favorite books. Also diverse in photographs.  This is a must have for your library collection and makes a great gift!
