Picture Book Review: Help Wanted, Must Love Books

Shailey's Dad gets a new job and can no longer read to her just before bed. Shailey interviews readers for the position. Fairy Tale characters apply - but none of them seem quite right for the job. 

I loved this book - it's perfect for summer reading. It's very funny. I loved the fairy tale characters who appeared looking for a job - even though they were all wrong for it. Of course I loved the reading before bed time tradition. 

A must have picture book for school and public libraries.

I loved this TV show and will always mourn it's ending. Especially after that cliff hanger. Every so often my hopes are high that it's going to come back, but so far nothing.

Still, this show left a huge impression on me.

And this picture book reminded me of it.

Mamie Peanut Johnson had a dream. She wanted to play baseball professionally. But the All-American Girls Baseball League rejected her - not because of her talent but because of the color of skin. Mamie didn't give up. Instead she became the first female pticher (at the age of 19) in the Negro Leagues' Indianapolis Clowns - a male team. She pitched for the team for three years breaking records and barriers. 

A great story and a must have book for school and public libraries!

It's also a wonderful book for Black History Month and Women's History Month

The Good:
Lots of great ideas
A variety of ideas: recipes, crafts, activities, and exercise
Fun illustrations and pictures
Diverse girls shown in both pictures and illustration
Reading is mentioned several times

The Bad:
Nitpicking here - while there are a few guys in the book, most of it seems geared towards girls.

The Verdict: Grab this one for your library, perfect for students going through exams, the college application process, or any other stressful time.

Picture Book Review: My Hometown

This book displays one town's Main Street history from 1860s to present day.

My Thoughts: A great read with very little words, this book is perfect for this year's Summer Reading theme. It illustrates how the town stays the same through the year, but more importantly how it changes with the building and the people. Great for one on one reading where you can pour over the amazing illustrations.
