Picture Book Wednesday: Kindness Books

Here are some picture books about kindness, which would also be perfect for Summer Reading this year.

A Board Book:

We are kind to each other and to ourselves. There is a list of vocabulary and this book showcases what each word means. The illustrations are wonderful, colorful, and bright. A wonderful book to share.

Faizah's teacher asks an important question - what kind of world do you want? She wants a kind world. filled with friendship and people helping people. Faizah and her friend help create that world at recess. They she becomes sad because she doesn't match her sister for the pictures at school, but luckily her friends are there to help. A wonderful story about creating a world full of kindness.

A mother and child are trying to cross the border to be safe. They have a long wait ahead of them. They create a community of sorts while they wait. The notebook keeps track of the names of people who are seeking asylum and their country of origin. It's sad but uplifting at the same time.

When school is out, it's time to play. This brightly colorfully illustrated inclusive book shares all kinds of ways to play and have fun together. With the right amount of text, this makes a great read aloud and it could be made into an interactive read.

This book showcases many ways to be kind to someone who might be having a bad day. So many great messages in this book. There's an author's note and some activities to try at the end of the book.

Teen Summer Reading Program (4): We Are Stronger Together

Here is the final week of the summer reading program posts.

I talked about craft ideas for the week 1 and week 2. I talked about food programs for week 3.

And this week I'm talking about book ideas.

It's harder to buy books for this theme for teens. There are a lot more books for kids around kindness, community, and friendship...

There are a lot of older YA titles about friendship but I'm looking for new titles to add to the collection.

What else could you add to this list?

Teen Summer Reading Program (3)

The past two weeks we talked about craft programs:

This week we're talking about food programs.

This is how we do them at my library- they are for both kids and teens.

And yes, we are still doing them virtual because it's easier and we connect with more people this way.

Themed Ideas:

Lawn Mowing (A Good deed)
I would use twizzlers instead of straws...

Teen Summer Reading Program (2): We are Stronger Together

Last week I shared some Teen craft ideas that could be used for a Friendship theme.
If you missed it, check it out

Here are more craft ideas.

Yes, you can make these with kids - but the teens can make more elaborate ones.

You can leave them in books around the library or they can keep them
You can write a sweet message inside
These are posted for Valentine's Day, but they can be used anytime. Teens could make these more elaborate also.

Come back next week for some food program ideas!

Teen Summer Reading Program (1): We are Stronger Together

I rarely follow the summer theme for teens - there are times when it works out nicely and times when it doesn't. The teens in my community don't seem to care if the programs are based on a theme. They just want to have fun.

These could be Friendship - as in make them and gift them to a friend/neighbor...

Could be virtual or in person.
We do a virtual one every four months at my library for teens and adults.

You can make keychains or jewelry...
You can draw, you can use stramps, you can trace
the sky is the limit here.

Come back next week for more craft ideas!

Go back and check them out if you missed them.

This week it' all about picture books to add to your collection.

Again, I'm focusing on the big three: Friendship, Kindness, and Community.

Kindness:

Feelings and Friendship:

Community:

That's the end of the summer reading posts for kids - stay tuned next week for ideas for teens!
