Review: She Knows All the Names

* Book 2 in the Throne of Khetara trilogy *
Book 2 continues where the first book leaves of. The Princess, the rebel, the thief, and the priestess continue their quests. They all don't know about each other, but as the danger moves towards them all, they begin to suspect there's more to the plan. They have a higher purpose...if they don't die first.
My Thoughts: I loved this sequel. I don't want to say too much because of spoilers, but I love how everything came together. There were lots of moments of danger, secrets and betrayals, and action. There were moments of friendships and alliances. And snakes. There were snakes. I am eagerly awaiting the next book!

Review: His Face is the Sun

* Book 1 in a trilogy *
Four people: a thief, a rebel, a Princess, and a priestess in training are all tied together because of a prophecy. Only they don't know it.

The thief releases an evil that no one can stop.
The rebel helps ignite a revolution that will forever change her world
The Princess sees something terrible happening but doesn't stop it.
The priestess in training is trying to understand her new life, but she's also forced to understand the politics of the palace.

Why are they important and what can they do together?
My Thoughts: This book is about discovering who these four characters are and why they are important. There are a lot of twist and turns, lots of action, and lots of danger. The four stories are woven together, similar to Game of Thrones. Luckily, I read this one and then the sequel (more on that soon). I love how the stories come together. There's so much to pour over in this book - and it just might made the reader look up Ancient Egyptian mythology.  The blend of history and fantasy couldn't have been better. This opening book is perfect for a crossover with adults!

Blog Tour: The Way It Hurts

The Way It Hurts by Patty Blount

From the award-winning author of Some Boys comes a new ripped-from-the-headlines story about the unthinking backlash of Twitter culture
There may be two sides to every story, but sometimes there’s only one way to set things right…

Music is Elijah’s life. His band plays loud and hard, and he’ll do anything to get them a big break. He needs that success to help take care of his sister, who has special needs. So he’d rather be practicing when his friends drag him to a musical in the next town…until the lead starts to sing.

Kristen dreams of a career on stage like her grandmother’s. She knows she needs an edge to get into a competitive theater program—and being the star in her high school musical isn’t going to cut it. The applause and the attention only encourage her to work harder.

Elijah can't take his eyes off of Kristen's performance, and he snaps a photo of her in costume that he posts online with a comment that everybody misunderstands. It goes viral. Suddenly, Elijah and Kristen are in a new spotlight as the online backlash spins out of control. And the consequences are bigger than they both could have ever imagined because these threats don’t stay online…they follow them into real life.

PATTY BLOUNT grew up quiet and invisible in Queens, NY, but found her voice writing smart and strong characters willing to fight for what’s right. Today, she’s the award-winning author of edgy, emotional contemporary romance. Powered by way too much chocolate, Patty supports women’s rights by giving a voice to characters facing realistic situations like rape (SOME BOYS, 2014), bullying (SEND, 2012), and grief (NOTHING LEFT TO BURN, 2015). She enjoys hearing from her readers so visit her website or follow her on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.

What's your favorite scene?
I have so many favorite scenes in this book, but I think my absolute favorite scene is when Elijah and Kristen share their first kiss. I began my writing career writing contemporary romance so I'm just a sucker for love scenes.

Elijah's got swagger and attitude in truckloads but the truth is, he's kind of a jerk. Except around Kristen. Well, not always. Okay, sometimes, he's a jerk around her, too, but it's not on purpose.

For her, he's willing to change, willing to let her see beneath the act and the pretense, even willing to let her hang out with his sister, who has special needs. But the one thing he's NOT willing to do is risk the friendship he and Kristen have developed by indulging in the wild attraction he has for her. And that's pretty much because he knows he's a jerk and just doesn't want her to think it, too.

Elijah's true self emerges over the course of the story. Kristen sees how he is with his sister and when Etta, her grandmother, suffers a health crisis, Elijah is there for her every step of the way. There are a number of near-misses but the big kiss finally comes when Kristen stops waiting for Elijah to make a move and takes matters into her own hands.

Here it is:

Elijah took my hands. “Okay, look. Maybe you’re right. Maybe these people are taking this whole battle thing way too seriously. If you’re scared, then we’ll stop. No more posts except for appearance information.”

“So no more battle of the sexes, no more make Kris scream?”

He held up his hand. “Swear to God.”

“Okay.” I sighed in relief. “You’d really do that?”

He leaned closer and repeated the vow. “I promise, Kris.”

And just like that, I forgot why I was mad at him. I couldn’t talk, couldn’t breathe, couldn’t even blink because I was afraid he’d let go. This was the part of him I adored. I clung to him for a long moment, and when his gaze drifted to my mouth, I wondered if—hoped— prayed—he’d finally kiss me.

And then, Etta’s voice suddenly spoke inside my head. “Well, my God, darling, it’s the twenty-first century. What on earth are you waiting for? You can kiss him.”

I could. Yes. Yes, I could just lift my head and lean in and kiss Elijah Hamilton like it was a normal, ordinary occurrence.

Right. Like kissing Elijah Hamilton would ever be ordinary?

I’d watched him kiss that girl at the mall and was sure I’d memorized all the steps in his routine. He’d move in, grip my face between his hands, run his thumb along my jaw, and finally, glide his arm down around my body, pulling me against his own, all the while, peeking through his lashes to see if I enjoyed it.

I wasn’t sure when I decided—or even what made me decide. I just touched my lips to his and waited.

It took a second or two. But then there was a sudden, tiny squeak from him, and I felt the pulse in his wrist leap under my fingertips. And then, his hands were in my hair, angling my head just the way he liked it, his tongue brushing against mine, so soft it might have been my imagination... except imaginary kisses were never so intense. He kissed me like I was a song he wrote, lips wrapped around every word until it hummed with hidden meaning and promise, and his hands held me the way they held his guitar—like the music would stop if he let me go.

To me, this is like a perfect kiss. I love how it’s everything she imagined it would be.

 That's a pretty good kiss!

And one lucky reader (Canada/US only please) will win a copy of the book!

Review: Coming Up For Air

* Last book in the Hundred Oaks series *
Swimming has been Maggie's focus for as long as she can remember. She spends her days swimming, eating, and sleeping. Then does it all over again the next day.  She's hoping to make the Olympic team one day.

Because of her goal, she hasn't lived the normal high school life. She hangs out with her friends at least once a week for a night out - food and laughter. But she's missed out on having boyfriends.

Now she after an incident at a party, she doesn't want to be embarrassed by her lack of experience with guys. So she asks her best friend and fellow swimmer for lessons on hooking up - which could be the best thing that ever happened to her or a complete disaster.

My Thoughts: I really love this series and I'm sad that it's over because I would keep reading it forever. But I do love how it ended, especially with the epilogue. I loved seeing favorite characters and knowing what's happened to them since we left them last.

I loved this friends to lovers story. And I love how focused both Levi and Maggie were on their swimming goals. Of course I love how much Maggie had to eat all the time. I loved their moments together and their conversations. I love how supportive they were of each other during their swim meets.

I'm eager to read whatever Miranda Kenneally writes next.

Cover Thoughts: Love it!

Library Recommendation: Get this series for your library! Strong female characters with amazing sports skills, great friendship, and of course romance.

Which character from the Heartbreak Chronicles has been your favorite to write and why?
JJ Morris, because his dialogue is incredibly entertaining to write.

If you could tour the world with any band, who would it be?
I would love to go on tour with Ed Sheeran. I know he isn’t a band, but hands down, he’s my favorite artist. One day I hope I can write romance novels at the level he writes love songs.

If you had to listen to one song and one song only for the rest of your life, which song would you choose?
Don’t laugh, but “Gold Digger” by Kanye West. I honestly don’t understand why I love it so much, but whenever it comes on my husband says I get a dopey smile on my face. I suppose I like it because it’s catchy and the lyrics are hilarious.

What books or authors inspire you?
Bookwise, I love Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins. I think it does an amazing job of capturing the butterflies in your stomach feeling that takes me back to high school. In regards to authors who inspire me, I grew up reading Sarah Dessen, so she’s always been someone I look up to.

If you had to choose one line from Paper Hearts as your favorite, which would it be?

Sounds great right? I know I'm looking forward to reading it! And lucky you, you can enter to win a copy ( US and Canada residents only please)

Review: Girl out of Water

Anise can't wait to spend the last summer before senior year hanging out with her friends and surfing. She feels most at home by the ocean, so much so that she isn't considering leaving for college. But when her aunt is in a serious accident, her father decides that they will both spend the summer in Nebraska helping out.

Anise isn't pleased with this situation. She's going to miss so much time with her friends and the waves. Sure, she wants to be good and help take care of her cousins, but she also wants her own summer.

Taking care of three kids isn't easy, but luckily their town has a skate park where they hang out most days. Anise gets suckered into learning how to skate with a bet from Lincoln. Could skating help her overcome her loneliness and make the time go by?
My Thoughts: I really enjoyed this book. I loved the surfing and the skating parts. I enjoyed watching Anise struggle while she tried to not follow in the footsteps of her mother who leaves everyone behind. I loved her moments with Lincoln (a diverse character). I really liked her moments with her cousins - both the twins and Emery. I like that both Lincoln and Anise had baggage but they were able to look past it. i like how they were able to tell each other the truth about themselves. A great summer romance with family and friendship drama while trying to figure out your path in life.

Cover Thoughts: Great - I get it more after reading the book

Review: Some Boys

Grace has liked Ian for a while. But she knows that he'll reject her after what happened in the woods. One night at a party, the golden boy of the town (and Ian's best friend) raped her.  But when she accuses him, the whole town turns against her.

Now, armed with her attitude and fierce clothing, Grace keeps the world at bay. But when she and Ian are forced to spend the spring vacation at the school cleaning lockers, they end up talking. They share secrets. Does Ian like her? Is Grace ready to trust anyone? Does Ian believe Grace?
My Thoughts: It took me a while to read this one because of the subject matter, but I'm so glad that I read it! When the book opens, the rape has already happened and Grace is going through hell. I love how she defends herself and doesn't run from the situation, even though she thinks about it. I hate that she's put in this situation. I hate that almost everyone, with the exception of her mother and Ian, have it out for her. I love the duel point of views and seeing the sides of the story from both Grace and Ian. I really liked Ian's father. This is definitely a #YASaves book that should be required reading.

Cover Thoughts: Great

Library Recommendations: Highly recommended for public libraries.

Review: Defending Taylor

 * A Hundred Oaks novel *
Taylor had it all, until one little lie tore her life apart. Now, she's enrolled in public school, playing for a soccer team who doesn't want her help, friendless, and her parents are annoyed at her actions. So long perfect life.

Now, she's struggling to be noticed by her family and struggling with her relationships. Her old friends have no time for her and she's not making any new friends at the school.

But an old friend is hanging around town - an old friend that Taylor used to crush over. He too has chosen a different path than the one set before him. He too is a disappointment to his family. The more time Taylor spends with Ezra, the more she wants a different life.
My Thoughts: So first off, I Loved this book. I love returning to Hundred Oaks and seeing old characters. I really liked the political aspect of the book. I really liked how Taylor's life shattered and wasn't perfect anymore, inspiring her to find out what she wanted from life vs what was expected from her. I loved her moments with Ezra. I enjoyed her moments on the soccer team - both the snappy comebacks and how she helped other players. I felt bad for her - for the lie she told that changed her life, for her parents' anger at her, and for the way the press ate her up. But I like how she didn't deny everything after she found out the consequences. Another wonderful book from Miranda Kenneally that I couldn't stop reading.

Cover Thoughts: Cute!

Library Recommendation: Highly Recommended for all YA sections.

Praise for Defending Taylor

“I can’t quite put my finger on what is so enthralling about Kenneally’s newest novel, but it totally sucked me in. I loved that Kenneally didn’t go with an easy, traditional happy-go-lucky ending. I also enjoyed the flawed nature of the characters, which made them feel more relatable. This is a great summer read and my favorite novel by Kenneally so far!” –RT Book Reviews, 4 Stars
Summary:

There are no mistakes in love.

Captain of the soccer team, president of the Debate Club, contender for valedictorian: Taylor’s always pushed herself to be perfect. After all, that’s what is expected of a senator’s daughter. But one impulsive decision—one lie to cover for her boyfriend—and Taylor’s kicked out of private school. Everything she’s worked so hard for is gone, and now she’s starting over at Hundred Oaks High.

Soccer has always been Taylor’s escape from the pressures of school and family, but it’s hard to fit in and play on a team that used to be her rival. The only person who seems to understand all that she’s going through is her older brother’s best friend, Ezra. Taylor’s had a crush on him for as long as she can remember. Excerpt from Defending Taylor:
I now understand culture shock: it’s me experiencing Hundred Oaks High for the first time.
A lot of kids go here. Five hundred? A thousand? There are so many I can’t tell. At St. Andrew’s, there were only forty kids in my entire class. We lived on a calm, sprawling, green campus. Walking down the halls of Hundred Oaks feels like last-minute Christmas shopping at a crowded mall.
Two guys wearing football jerseys are throwing a ball back and forth. It whizzes by my ear. A suspender-clad male teacher is hanging a poster for the science fair, while a couple is making out against the wall next to the fire alarm. If they move another inch, they’ll set off the sprinklers. At St. Andrew’s, kissing in the hall was an über no-no. We snuck under the staircase or went out into the woods. Ben and I did that all the time.
Thinking of him makes me stop moving. I shut my eyes. Dating Ben was stupid. Going into the woods with him was stupid. Thinking about what happened makes me so mad, I want to rip that newly hung science fair poster off the wall and tear it apart.
A boy shoves past me, slamming my arm with his backpack. That’s what I get for loitering in the middle of the hallway with my eyes closed. He looks me up and down. “You coming to Rutledge Falls this afternoon?”
“What?”
“Paul Simmons challenged Nolan Chase to a fight. Rutledge Falls. Three o’clock. Don’t tell the cops.”
A fight? Where the hell am I? Westeros?
A girl bumps into my side. “Watch it!” Flashing me a dirty look, she disappears into a classroom with a group of friends, chattering away.
Seeing those girls together reminds me of my best friends, Steph and Madison. Right now, they’re probably gossiping before trig starts. I miss Steph’s cool British accent and Madison’s cheerful laugh.
I take a deep, rattled breath. And then another. I feel trapped, like the time I got locked in my grandpa’s garage and no one found me for an hour and I banged on the windows until my fists turned purple from bruises.
I can’t believe I had to leave my school. My home.
All because I made one stupid decision.
I check my schedule. My first class is calculus 1, the most advanced math course Hundred Oaks offers. Just a week ago, I was taking an advanced calculus quiz at the University of the South. St. Andrew’s is one of the best prep schools in the country, and they offer seniors the opportunity to take courses at the university, which is up the road. Even though I was still in high school, the professors treated me just like a college kid. I was only in the course for two weeks, but still. It was insanely difficult. The truth is, unlike everybody else in my family, I hate math. I have to work at it harder than anything else in my life.
But if I didn’t take college calc, there’s a good chance I wouldn’t get into an Ivy League school. I need to go to a top-tier school because that’s what people in my family do. My father attended Yale, and my sister Jenna is there now. According to Dad, my brother Oliver—Jenna’s twin—is a traitor for going to Princeton, but I think Dad respects him for having the balls to make his own decision.
Me?
When Dad called me into his home office last night, he barely looked at me as he pored over my new schedule. The silence was killing me.
“I don’t know how Yale will still consider me if I’m not taking all AP courses,” I said. “Hundred Oaks only offers AP chemistry.”
Dad sighed, took off his glasses, and set down my schedule. “I’m incredibly disappointed in you, Taylor.”
I looked him straight in the eyes. His quiet restraint worried me. I’d never seen him so upset.
But I was upset too. He rarely had time to call me when I was away at school, but he could spare a few minutes to comment on my one screwup? After how hard I’ve always worked?
Over the years, I’ve done hours of homework every night. I had a 4.2 GPA at St. Andrew’s. A 1520 SAT score. I was on track to be valedictorian. I was captain of the soccer team and on the debate team. I did everything I could to show Yale that I worked hard. That I am a unique individual. Because that’s what Yale wants.
But my one misstep has muddied my glowing record.
Dad ended our conversation with a death knell.
“Tee, I gave you all the tools you needed to succeed,” he said. “I’ve paid for your private school education since first grade, and you squandered it by getting kicked out.”
“I’m sorry,” I said, my face burning. “I’m going to keep working hard at Hundred Oaks though.”
“You’re damn right you will.”
My father had me so flustered, I wasn’t thinking straight when I said, “Maybe Yale will still take me because of who I am.”
“You mean because of who I am.” Dad rubbed his eyes. “I’ve always taught you kids the importance of integrity, and the minute you got into trouble, instead of owning it, you called me to bail you out. And now you’re doing it again. Using my name to try to get ahead.”
I hung my head. “I’m sorry, Dad.”
“I love you more than anything, but you have to take responsibility for what you did. You’ll have to figure college out on your own.”
“What does that mean?” I asked slowly.
“It means I’m not lifting a finger. I won’t be calling the alumni association or the school president to put in a good word for you.”
“But didn’t you do that for Jenna and Oliver?” I blurted.
He put his glasses back on. “You need to own up, Tee.”
So here I am, glancing around the unfamiliar halls of Hundred Oaks. The school is neat and orderly, but it doesn’t look completely clean, like no matter how hard you scrub, it still looks old. At least it’s not juvie.
I step into my math class, which is already filled with kids. I choose an empty seat at a wobbly wooden desk and stare out the window at the sunny, seventy-degree September day. I bet at St. Andrew’s, my world politics teacher is telling my friends, “Gather your books. It’s a beautiful day out. Let’s have class in one of the gardens.”
I check out the problem set on the whiteboard. I could do this level of math years ago…
My former guidance counselor told me that colleges look for trends in our GPA and activities over four years of high school. So that means when colleges see my application, they will see:
      I’m taking easier classes;
      I’m no longer doing debate;
I’ve lost my soccer captainship this year; and
      I was expelled.
I have never simply given up when calculus got a lot tougher or an opponent ran faster than me on the soccer field. So I refuse to believe my entire future is over because of one mistake.
I just need to figure out how to move forward.

Sounds great right?
I'm super excited to read it!
And we're lucky enough to be giving away 2 Copies of Defending Taylor
