Chatting with Kristan Higgins

Happy Book Birthday Kristan!

Anything for You comes out today. I was lucky enough to get an early look at the book and as much as I hate for this series to be over, it's everything I could have wanted and more!
*review to follow later this week.

I'm lucky to be chatting with the fantastic author herself!
Take a look and don't forget to snag yourself a copy of her book.

What was the hardest part about writing a series?
It’s staying true to the characters and facts I introduced way before I knew what I’d be writing about. I had to reread the earlier books and sometimes would smack my head and say, “Dang it! Painted myself into a corner, didn’t I?” In the case of ANYTHING FOR YOU, I had never mentioned Jessica’s little brother. BUT…neither had I said she was an only child, so I figured I could make her a big sister.

Did you use any of your stories as a waitress for inspiration for Jessica?
Oh, sure. Being a good waitress is hard. I was a not-bad waitress, I think. There’s a scene where Jess gets a big tip from a table of old fraternity brothers…that happened to me my very first night. (Thanks, guys!)

If you were to own a restaurant, what type of food would you serve?
Probably Connor’s type of food: the basics done perfectly. I love to eat out, but when food gets too fussy and fancy, it kind of loses me. You know… that one scallop that’s been soaked in an herb-infused brine and wrapped lovingly with organic prosciutto made by nuns in a convent off the coast of Italy and topped with an eyedropper full of yogurt-based béchamel sauce…nah! Give me a good burger any day.

Me too! Burgers and pizza all the way!

Many of your titles seem to have the bigger picture view - how do you come up with them?
Titles are tough for me. Ideally, a phrase jumps out from the book, and I say “Ah HA! Gotcha!” More often, though, I have to rack my brain and email my editor and we go back and forth and back and forth. This time, though, it was my first choice.

How do you create a character like Jessica - with a hard past and tough on the outside seem so likeable once you get to know her?
A lot of my characters have had tough pasts—they might not come from a good home, were unloved as kids, struggled to find their way. We all have that secret heartbreak. But yes, Jessica was that and then some. I hadn’t planned on writing her as a heroine, but as the Blue Heron series went on, I liked her more and more. In Book #2, The Perfect Match, she starts working for Honor Holland at the vineyard, and I saw how much she wanted to do her job well, and how much Honor liked her.

Knowing a character’s secret fears and past is the key to making them likable, I think. We don’t have to have the same background to understand a character. For example, I went on my first date at the age of 19, so I wasn’t exactly the high school tramp. But when you learn why Jessica did that, well…it tugs the heart, I hope.

Jessica is an amazing person - this was on Kristan's facebook page earlier in the month and it's one of my favorite quotes from the book and I think it shows off Jessica's personality.

Would you ever consider writing a YA book?
I haven’t ruled it out! I really love writing teenage characters (I really love teenagers, in fact). But for now, I seem to have found my niche.

I hope this happens one day!!!

What are you working on next?
Right now, I’m finishing up a book called ON SECOND THOUGHT, in which two sisters find their relationships abruptly ended and have to move in together. They’ve never been really close, but their circumstances require a little enforced togetherness while they figure out their new lives.

Sounds great - I can't wait to read it!

Upcoming Review: This is Where it Ends

At 10 am, the principal ends her welcome to the new semester speech. Two minutes later, the students get up to leave. That's when they discover the doors won't open.

The bullets start flying.

54 minutes later, it's all over. But what happens in those minutes will forever change the lives of everyone involved.
My Thoughts: What a powerful book! I couldn't stop reading it despite the tears rolling down my cheeks. I have to say, I hate that we live in a world where this happens. This book captures the terror of what I imagine the situation to feel like...and I hope that no one has to go through this again.

I liked the different perspectives of the book at different places in school at the time of the shooting. I liked the diverseness of voices.

I felt the fear. I felt the heartbreak. I felt the emotional pull of this story. I can't say I liked this book because it's such a terrible type of story - but it was a good book and a story that needs to be told.

Cover Thoughts: Powerful

Release date: January 5th
Final Thoughts: Pick this up and read.  Then pass it on. A very important book for all.

Author Interview: Jen Calonita and Giveaway

I've been a huge fan of Jen Calonita's forever! I finally got the change to meet her last year! And I'm thrilled to have her on the blog talking about her new middle grade book VIP:I'm with the Band (and if you missed my post yesterday, check out what I think of the book! Spoiler: It's fantastic)

VIP: I'm With the Band

Do you have a favorite Boy Band? Have you ever met them?
My favorite boy band of all time is New Kids on the Block. Like Mac, I wrote to the band and asked them to a school dance. Joey McIntyre's mom wrote me back and I still have the postcard! I did eventually meet Joey when I was an entertainment editor at a teen magazine, but I never told him about my crush or the fact that I still had mail from his mother. All I could think when I saw him was: I slept on a pillow with your face on it for YEARS.

They were HUGE in late Elementary school. I was a fan too.

Why do you think boy bands are so popular?
I know for me, I just love great pop music. And when you combine an awesome pop song with great vocals and a cute group of boys singing them, the combo can't be beat. They are the ultimate crush.

Would you rather be in a band or tour with the band?
Tour with the band for sure! Then I'd get to hang out with them and have none of the pressure of performing or dealing with the media!

Will there be more VIP books?
Yes! The sequel to I'M WITH THE BAND is called BATTLE OF THE BANDS and it pits Mac and Perfect Storm up against a new pop duo called Thunder and Lightening. The two groups do not get along and poor Mac gets thrown in the middle! BATTLE OF THE BANDS comes out in July 2016.
VIP: Battle of the Bands

I'm so glad there will be more books!

What are you working on now?
I'm working on the third book in the Fairy Tale Reform School series, which will be called TRICKED. Rumplestiltskin is a big thorn in Gilly's side in this book and he's so much fun to write about!

Sounds fun!

Anything I didn't ask?
My favorite color? It's green. If I have a dog? The answer is yes and his name is Captain Jack Sparrow. He's the feistiest Chihuahua in the world! :)

Doesn't this book sound great? Well you're in luck! Jen Calonita will gift one to a lucky reader (SIGNED)

Tween Tuesday Review: VIP: I'm with the Band

Mac and her friends Love the band Perfect Storm. Thanks to her mother, not only do they score tickets to see the band, but backstage passes to meet them. Mac can't believe her good luck when she finally gets to talk with her crush Zander. He's everything she hoped he would be.

Then her mother tells her even more good news. Because of her mother's job, she and Mac will be touring with the band. Mac doesn't want to leave her friends behind, but she can't imagine anything cooler.

As she gets to know the guys, she witnesses their off camera behavior. Could her crush not be the boy she thought he was?
My Thoughts: I Loved this book; I couldn't put it down. I really loved Mac's love for art and the comic book pages of her alter-ego Mac Attack. I loved Mac hanging out with the band and becoming one of the guys: from the whipped cream fights to the touring cities together to showing off their art. I loved Mac's relationship with her friends and her new friendship with Jilly. Mac messed up at times, but I love how she pulled it together and tried to do the right thing. I can't wait for more books about Mac and Perfect Storm.

Final Thoughts: Perfect for music loving tweens and for nolastigc adult readers
