Middle Grade Review: Blood in the Water

Kaylani's having a hard year. Her father's is in prison. Her friends have dropped her. Now it's summer. She's been invited to Martha's Vineyard for the summer with family friends. She's never been there before and she's not sure she really wants to go. But she goes for her father.

Oak Bluffs is nice; there are a lot of wealthy Black people with summer homes. Kaylani's staying with the Watsons and their two granddaughters. She's sharing a room with London. London is not thrilled with the idea, but she does show her guest around.

The two girls run into London's older sister Cassie sneaking out to a party. They beg to go. The party gets busted up by the cops. Kaylani and London end up separated from Cassie on the way home.

The next day, they learn about the death of a boy at the party. His death was made to look like an accident, but someone killed him.
My Thoughts: I almost didn't read this one because it's described as a horror novel. And it's not. It's a thriller. I'm so glad that I read it because I tore through this book. I loved it. I loved that it was summer on Martha's Vineyard. I wanted to give Kaylani a hug for all the struggles. She was brave and strong; I admired her. I didn't like London or Cassie; they were jerks. But I did like Miles. I loved the cameo from the library.

Cover Thoughts: So good!

Library Recommendation: Highly recommended thriller for your middle grade school and public library collection.

TBR Check-in: Summer

This week, we shared our Fall TBR list, so now it's time to check in on how we did for our summer list.

To be honest, not well.

Part of it is summer at the library is so busy that mostly I just crash when I get home from work.
The other part is that we were in the process of changing book vendors at the library, so I didn't put in a book order for several months and thus missed many new books.

Which I will work on as they come in.

However, I did read these:

And I have a couple books checked out from the library that I hope to get to soon.

Review: Last Night was Fun

Emmy works for a baseball team - in an old boys network. She struggles to make people notice her work. Gabe is the bane of her existance at work. They compete a lot and most of the time, Gabe gets the recognition. They are both up for the same promotion. Emmy feels certain that she's not going to get the job.

When a random number texts her, she shares that he has been given a fake number. But the more they talk, the more Emmy reveals. It's easy to talk to him. Soon texting with him becomes the best part of her day.  Could it be time to meet?
My Thoughts: This is a You've Got Mail story in the baseball world. And it's delightful. I couldn't put this book down and I didn't want it to end. The banter between Emmy and Axe Murderer (inside joke) made me laugh. I loved the bird puns. The ending came a little quickly. I loved the wedding moments between the sisters; they were sweet.

Cover Thoughts: Charming

Library Recommendation: A Must Have Book for your public library's romance section

Review: The Diva Poached an Egg

* Book 18 in the Domestic Diva series *
When Sophie's at a convention, someone asks her for a secret meeting. Mitzi requests her presence. When Sophie arrives, she enters the meeting space a little early. Mitzi is not there, but another woman is on the floor. She's dead.

Denise was Mitzi's partner. They were updating the house for Denise and her husband. Mitzi is terrified that someone is coming for her next. She goes into hiding and asks Sophie for help. Is there someone after Mitzi?
My Thoughts: This cozy series has many installments. The 18th book talks a great deal about brunch and will make the reader crave baking something delicious for that occassion. Luckily, there are recipes in the back of the book. I love this series: for the foodie moments and for the characters.

* There is a fun cameo from the Paws and Claws Mystery series heroine.

Library Recommendation: A fantastic series for your library

Picture Book Review: I am Strong

Todd Parr has a new book out - and it's fantastic. With the signature bold colors, these books really stand out. The message is lovely - it's all about feeling your feelings and being brave enough to move forward. As always, there was a note from Todd.

* Todd Parr is an author in our favorites bin at the library.

** A must have book for your school and public library collections.
