Christmas Romance Reading Challenge

Last week's Top Ten Tuesday introduced me to Cindy's Book Corner who shared this Christmas reading challenge with me.

Tea & Cake For the Soul has created a reading challenge.

And since I love Christmas and Holiday Romances, I thought I would join in the fun!

Want to read:
I created a post here where you can see ALL the pretty covers.

Already read (this year):

BBAW Interview with Jeanne

Day OneIntroduce yourself (1)

I was excited for my pairing this year! It's always fun to chat with other bloggers. If you haven't seen Jeanne's blog, Necromancy Never Pays, go check it out and then get to know Jeanne a little better

Why did you start blogging way back in 2008?
I actually have the answer to this question on my blog because it explains the title, Necromancy Never Pays.
One day in February of 2008, my family was playing a game called “Would You Rather” and got a card asking whether we’d rather have three questions answered or be able to resurrect someone. The kids and I went for the three questions, but Ron was hesitating over resurrection. “Oh come on,” I said, “necromancy never pays; literature shows us this over and over.”
“Oh yeah,” Ron said, “The Monkey’s Paw.”
And then we went on to the next card. Some things are just clear, once you remember all the stuff you’ve read about them.

How has your blog changed over the years?
I post less frequently and the posts are longer. Sometimes I include photos now, which I hardly ever did on Blogger (I moved to Wordpress in May 2011). Since my kids left home for college, I talk about them less but discuss books they’ve given me or asked me to read more.

What’s the best and worst parts about blogging?
The best is to have a forum to talk about “what makes this book so great,” as Jo Walton puts it. Sometimes it’s also nice to have a place to articulate my thoughts in front of the small part of the world that reads this blog.
Are there any worst parts? Maybe when an author takes offense at something I’ve done on the blog, most notably the poet Franz Wright. He did not like the way I offered his poem up to my readers for play. http://necromancyneverpays.blogspot.com/2010/04/intake-interview.html

You share a lot of poems on your blog – do you have a favorite? Do you write poetry?
Asking someone who loves poetry for one favorite is like asking someone who loves reading for one favorite book. I can tell you some of my favorites, in various ways:

Philip Larkin, by the number of poems discussed on the blog, is evidently my favorite poet. My favorite Larkin poem is either the one that begins with “My mother, who hates thunderstorms…” or “Home is so sad.” Then there’s my favorite one to introduce people to, which begins “They fuck you up, your mum and dad…”
Wallace Stevens is another of my favorite poets.  Especially since moving to snowy Ohio, I love his lines from the end of “Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird” about what it’s like when it’s going to snow:  “It was evening all afternoon. It was snowing/ and it was going to snow.”

Other favorite poems:  Auden’s “Musee des Beaux Arts, Dobyns’ “How to Like It,” and Yeats’ “That the Night Come,” the last of which I inadvertently memorized when I was young and can still recite.

I do write poetry. I have a chapbook entitled “Preface to Photo Albums Three and Four” and put one of my poems (“Animal Retribution”) on the blog in January 2012, when I was experimenting with sandwiching various kinds of poetic content with blog spam.

What’s the last book you read that you think every library should own a copy?
Most libraries do own copies of the kinds of books I read. I wish sometimes that public libraries had room for more of the classics, so if someone wanted to read Sterne’s Tristram Shandy she could go pick it up, but I’m not sure how many people would do it.  I got my local public library to order some of the YA titles my kids and I were reading when they were middle school age. Now anyone in my small town can check out a copy of de Larrabeiti’s The Borribles, although I’m told that few do. If I read about a book and discover that my library doesn’t have it, I can put in a request. Sometimes it takes a while, but the local libraries in my area are quite responsive to patron requests.  It’s because of me that the local library has a copy of Harkaway’s The Gone-Away World.

Fun right? Now be sure to check in with your favorite blogs to see who they interviewed!

Getting Ready for BEA: part 1

Now that BEA is officially here, the excitement is starting to grow! I'm so excited to talk with everyone about books and to meet new and old friends! I'll be sharing my tips each week until the big event!

If this is your first time going, I have a few tips for you:

Start planning. Usually, some of my plans go out the window long before I leave BEA because I just can't get to everything. But it's great to have a plan and for the most part it works.

Try to plan:
Publishers you want to to with (names of contacts)
Books you want to talk to publishers about
ARCs you're interested in picking up
Authors you want to meet at their signings
Bloogers/Librarians you want to meet

Now's a great time to book checking on, creating, or printing more business cards. Lots of librarians/bloggers exchange cards during meetings in line. Make sure it as all your important information, plus if your a blogger, your blog logo. People might not recognize your name, but they could be readers of your blog.

See you next week for more tips!

BBAW: An Old Favorite Book

I remember waiting for The Cinderella Society. I fell in the love with the cover. I love Princess stories. I was So happy when an ARC came my way. I devoured this book and haven't stopped handing it off to teens who love Princess stories, who love Meg Cabot, who love secret societies. It's a fabulous fun read!

In college, I decorated the ceilings of my rooms with pictures from magazines. At work, I've decorated the walls with...book covers, movie posters from books, stickers, and magazines photos that make me smile. The Cinderella Society is one of the book covers posted on my wall - but this one's special because right above it, I have a promotional postcard from Kay with my thoughts:
Makeovers, secret societies, romance, and showdowns,
I LOVED this book!

I love her highlighting my quote. Getting this postcard totally made my day!

I love the shoe on top of the pink boxes and the fancy writing!

BBAW: What Book Blogging Means to Me

I first started blogging on Myspace. Remember when that was cool? I wanted to showcase books we had coming into the library and I also wanted to be able to keep track of the books I read. My early reviews weren't really reviews - but I was highlighting the books I read and sharing them with my followers.

On Friday October 3rd 2008 I made the change to Blogger and I've been here every since. I've updated my background - learned a little bit about HTML. This past summer, I had it custom designed by a fellow book blogger ICEY BOOKS.

*Blogging means that I know about books months ahead of time, which is perfect for my job.
*Blogging means that I can say to a patron, I haven't read that book, but I've heard good things about it - which is awesome because I'll never be able to read all the books I want to read. Yet, I can read and share what others think.
*Blogging means that I have an outlet to talk about books and to share my thoughts about books. I may not have the most followers or the most comments, but I blog for me.
*Blogging means gushing over the books that I love. I don't usually post about books I don't finish or books that I did finish but were mediocre. Thus, I my review tend to have the word love in them.
*Blogging means a community of people who understand teen literature and/or teen librarianship and I can go to those communities if I have a question (or ten)

I love the community of book bloggers - how they share their knowledge and information. I'm happy to be apart of it!

Book Blogger Appreciation Week: Thanks

I LOVE being a book blogger. I love conversations about books with strangers about books I've read, books they're reading, and upcoming books. I love talking about them in comments, on Twitter, on Facebook...or in person.

What I love best about reading other blogs is finding out about books:
Books I didn't know about, but can't wait to read.
Books I didn't realize were coming out soon
Books that aren't my cup of tea, but would be perfect for my teens readers at the library.

So Thanks!

Thanks for making me smile, for making me think about books, and for letting me share my bookish thoughts with you!

Countdown to Book Expo America 2012

I can't believe BEA is less than a month away.

I couldn't be more excited to be with my people (all those who love books) again!

This year I'll be attending Book Blogger Con for the first time. I really wanted to go the last two years, but couldn't make it. What should I expect???

I know that it's different this year.

I'm really excited to learning more about blogging and to meet some of the people behind my favorite blogs!

For BEA, I'll be there Tuesday and Wednesday.

In preparation, I'm doing the following:
* checking out the author signings in booth and marking down the ones I want to see. There's so many that I know I'm going to have to narrow them down, but it's going to be hard.
* checking out the author signings in the autographing stations. This is also going to be hard to narrow down.
*Making a list of all the publishers I want to visit and any contacts I have there
*Double checking to make sure I have enough business cards to hand out
* Prepping my two to three sentence plug on why my blog rocks to give to publishers/authors/bloggers/librarians that I meet.
*planning on comfy walking shoes and layers because I'm always hot there, but sometimes cold.
*A suitcase to check
*planning snacks because of the food prices/variety and because I don't want to take time out of the day.  There's so many people to meet!

Anything I'm forgetting?

So looking forward to meeting you there! Who else is going?

NELA

I've been away for the first bit of the week at the NELA conference in Burlington, VT.

I went to presentations on teen programs, learned about folk and fairy tales, presented on blogging, heard the wonderful T.A. Barron speak, learned about the digital divide, and got some new ideas for displays.

If you didn't get to go to NELA, you can see the presentations/handouts here. My handout with various blogs is here. I know there were some programs I missed due to scheduling conflicts, so I'm happy to be able to look through the presentations myself.

I was nervous talking, but it turned out great. I LOVED meeting my co-bloggers
Leila Roy’s Bookshelves of Doom
Andrea Graham’s blog, 4YA
Josie Leavitt, one of the bloggers at ShelfTalker at Publishers Weekly

Here's a write up of our presentation. Sounds like we did pretty good!

Blog Award

A nice surprise: I got an award from my librarian and writer friend Jessica from I Read To Relax today. Thanks Jess!

I'm not very good at this next part - but I'll try.

Here's how the award works:
1) Thank and link back to the person who gave you the award.
2) Share 7 things about yourself.
3) Pass the award along to 7 bloggers who you have recently discovered and who you think are fantastic for whatever reason (in no particular order)
4) Contact the bloggers you have picked and let them know about the award!

7 Things about me:
1. I've finished writing my first book, have most of a first draft completed on another, and starting the third
2. I can only seriously write during November's NaNoWriMo
3. I LOVE Christmas season
4. The first snowfall of the year is ALWAYS magical to me
5. I hoard library books
6. I become a super fan girl when I meet YA authors - meeting Scott Westerfeld was the most embarrassing, but that's another story.
7. I've met Stephenie Meyer and Meg Cabot

Confessions of a Bookaholic
Lisa and Laura White
Youth Services Corner
Tanya's Reviews

Review Ratings

Here's something I'm curious about:

I never rate books (unless it's the reviews I'm doing for www.teensreadtoo.com). But I've been reading so many book blogs lately: The Story Siren, GreenbeanTeenQueen, and TheUnderCoverBookLover and they all rate books.
Mostly I say what I like about the book and I'll say I liked it, loved it, or adored it....but that's about it. Should I be saying more in terms of rating?

Anyone have any thoughts on the subject?
