Review: Girl Forgotten

Piper is new to town when she stumbles across a gravestone. Layla died twenty years ago, when she was Piper's age. A quick internet search reveals that she was murdered and that the case is unsolved. When Piper learns that her school requires a senior project, she decides to create a podcast based on the murder.

She learns the ins and outs of podcasting from a new friend. But not everyone is happy as she digs up old information and new rumors. She opens up new wounds and someone wants her to stop. Piper receives threatening letters, but she's too curious to stop digging.
My Thoughts: A great thriller. I did not want to put this book down. I did figure out the murdered, but it took me a while. I really enjoyed the podcasting pieces - from learning about podcasting to reading the transcripts. I loved the friendship develop between Piper and Jonas. I've read several of April Henry books and I've loved them all.

Cover Thoughts: I like it

Picture Book Wednesday: We Don't Lose Our Classmate

* Book 3 in the Penelope Rex series *

Penelope is scared of the goldfish. She's not looking forward to her turn at taking Walter home for the weekend. But maybe it will turn out ok...

I like how Penelope faces her fears and conquers them. She's determined to make it work - even after the scary moment of losing Walter. This series is funny, charming, and so good. I can't wait for more Penelope books

This week's topic is patriotic book covers. So I attempted to make a flag out of the books I've read this year...

Graphic Novel Review: Girl Taking Over

Lois Lane has a plan to take over the world -starting with her summer internship at CatCo. But as soon as she arrives, she finds Cat fired from her own company and her internship has become a gofer. Not to mention she's living with her ex-best friend.

When she uncovers a scoop, her new boss won't let her publish it. So, she publishes it herself, creating her own site. At least here, she has her own voice and she's ready to shout.
My Thoughts: I loved this graphic novel - about friendship, becoming confident in yourself, and finding your voice. I love how life didn't go according to Lois's plan - but that she made it work in her favor. I would like a sequel please!

Cover Thoughts: Cute

On Reader's Advisory

I chatted briefly about how reader's advisory is one of the favorite parts of my job as a librarian. And in the summer months, it happens almost daily.

We see so many people in the library during the summer - partly because it's summer and they have time and partly because we have SO MUCH happening in the summer in terms of programming.

Sometimes I'm in a program and we just happen to talk about books - favorite books, what people are reading, and book suggestions spiral from there.

But often times kids with their parents are coming in asking for book recommendations. Sometimes they run out of book titles and they need suggestions. Which I enjoy. We talk about what they like in a book and I load them up with other books.

But the ones that tug at my heartstrings the most are the kids or teens who aren't readers.

I'm not worried about the parent. After the initial greeting, I talk primarily to the reader.

After all the "reference interview" questions -

1. Do you like to read?
2. What kinds of movies/TV shows do you watch
3. What are your hobbies?
4. Do you like Sports?
5. Are you a foodie?

Once we find something they enjoy, then we can find the right book for them. I tell them I can talk about books all day and they aren't going to hurt my feelings if they tell me they aren't interested in a book. We talk through a number of books until we find one that appeals to them. It might take 10 books or 30 books. They might think the first book sounds great. It really all depends on the reader. I am patient as I walk through our library's collection.

I do ask them to come back and let me know what they think. And that is the best part. I love seeing if they felt a connection to the book. It's amazing when they ask for another book, just like this one.

And if I failed, failure is a part of life, and we start over again.

Review: Butt or Face

Using a cheeky guessing game format, Butt or Face? is a hilarious nonfiction picture book that teaches fascinating facts about animals! Are YOU ready to play?

Move over, Jeopardy, Family Feud, and The Price Is Right—this book will be your new favorite laugh-until-your-stomach-hurts family game! In Butt or Face, weird animals are introduced with a close-up photo. Kids must guess: are they seeing seeing...um...err... the bottom or the top? (summary from the publisher)

My Thoughts: This book is super entertaining and of course it's meant to be shared. Of course there's lots of laughter while you're guessing and then afterwards, you can read the factual information about the animal. The photos are great, forcing you to make so very hard choices. This would be fun sharing during a school visit - but expect lots of laughter.

Highly recommended - this book is MUST have for your school and public libraries.
