When Ren receives an email about an alien sighting in Kansas, she thinks it may support her theory. She also suspects that the cinco--five renegade godborns--are up to no good. Soon she finds herself embroiled in a quest to prevent the troublemakers from awakening the nine Aztec Lords of Night. Problem is, none of Ren's friends are available to help her hunt down the cinco and the dangerous gods they are resurrecting. Ren has no choice but to team up with two strangers recruited by Ah Puch: Edison, a teen hybrid demon, and Montero, an eleven-year-old Aztec hunter. Succeeding in this quest will prove that Ren is no fake, liar, or loser. But it isn't just another challenge. It could well be an impossible one that leaves Ren questioning her very existence.

Anyone who enjoys fast-paced myth-based adventures will be swept up in this one featuring Maya and Mexica gods and their magical offspring.

My Thoughts:

Ok, So I didn't read the Stormrunner trilogy (yet). Do I wish I did? (Yes). Did I need it? Not exactly, I think I would have understood more had I read them. I didn't realize the books were connected until I started reading.

Lots of action, danger, and magical elements in this one. I enjoyed how the friends tried to puzzle out the prophecy and understand what was happening around them. I loved the friendship moments. 

That cliff-hanger ending makes me want the next book immediately! I need to know what happens next!

Review: Misfits

* First in a new spin-off series *

Devin never really fit in - and she's not interested in attending Royal Academy. But she doesn't have a choice. Devin can talk to animals and she wants to work with them instead of learning how to dance, finding herself a prince, or learn how to become a damsel in distress.

In fact, she's so far from the damsel in distress, she helped saved the day from harpies, but managed to make the headmistress angry. She received her first strike against her.

A lady is supposed to wait for a prince to save her, not save herself and others. Devin believes there's something seriously wrong at the Royal Academy.

Tests are happening, but they don't feel like tests. Devin finds herself in the middle of a fight she doesn't understand and can't win.

My Thoughts: I loved Devin - for her feminist ways, for her ability to save herself and others. I admired her strength and determination - even in a world that didn't make sense for her. I loved her ways with animals and how she befriended and helped them. I liked the moments with her roommates - from their horror at her priorities to how they stood with her. I loved her fashion sense - pockets and pants. Of course there are mentions of other fairy tales. I can't wait to see where this story goes next.

Review: School Spirits

Izzy Brannick has been training her whole life to fight monsters. Her sister disappeared one night when they were taking down a group of witches. Since then, her mom's been over-protective.

Now Izzy has her first solo job. There's activity happening in a high school - murder by ghost. Izzy's job is to infiltrate the high school, figure out what's going on, and stop it. She's never gone to high school before.

Almost immediately, she befriends Remy - who turns out to be the leader of the ghost hunting society at school. Remy tells her of the ghost legend. Before long, Izzy experiences seeing the ghost herself.

Her mom's giving her a strict deadline on finishing the assignment, but Izzy's not sure she wants to leave high school and her new friends behind.

My Thoughts: A spin-off series from Hex Hall featuring her cousin. I loved this book, it had the same feel as the Hex Hall books - romance, ghosts, mysterious happenings, a new girl in school, and snarkiness. I love that Izzy's research into high school included reading teen magazines and watching hit TV shows (which reminded me of something on ABC Family). I hope there's more book coming with Izzy as the main character because there were several unanswered questions.
