Book 1 in Sea of Ink and Gold series
By Traci Chee
Release: September 13, 2016
A stunning debut set in a world where reading is unheard-of, perfect for fans of Inkheart and Shadow and Bone.
Sefia knows what it means to survive. After her father is brutally murdered, she flees into the wilderness with her aunt Nin, who teaches her to hunt, track, and steal. But when Nin is kidnapped, leaving Sefia completely alone, none of her survival skills can help her discover where Nin’s been taken, or if she’s even alive. The only clue to both her aunt’s disappearance and her father’s murder is the odd rectangular object her father left behind, an object she comes to realize is a book—a marvelous item unheard of in her otherwise illiterate society. With the help of this book, and the aid of a mysterious stranger with dark secrets of his own, Sefia sets out to rescue her aunt and find out what really happened the day her father was killed—and punish the people responsible.
With overlapping stories of swashbuckling pirates and merciless assassins, The Reader is a brilliantly told adventure from an extraordinary new talent.

Celebrate books! The Reader explores a world without reading. What would it mean to you to live in a world without books?
This would be the worst for me. I read every day. Sometimes it's only 10-15 minutes before bed if it's a busy day, but usually I read for an hour or so daily. Which allows me to read over 300 books a year. The books I read this year have changed a little bit, since I'm now a Children's Librarian too (in addition to a YA Librarian). So I've been reading more and more picture books to know my collection, especially the new books.
One of my earliest memories revolves around reading. My older sister taught me the alphabet and eventually how to read. Reading has always been a part of my life. I tore through books in during our silent reading time in school. I lived across the street from the public library. As I got older, I would bring stacks of books home, as many as I could carry.
Then when I was in high school, I applied for a job at the library. And the rest is history.
If I don't read, I get cranky - kind of like hangry. Reader is my escape from the world. I'm not sure where I would be without books, but I'm sure that I never want to find out! Plus I'd be out of a job...

I can't imagine a world without books - the thought makes me shudder. This might be a common answer, but Harry Potter is one of the books I couldn't live without. They are what I consider my 'comfort' books that I pick up anytime I am in need of something to take my mind off of life and just relax. Really interesting question! I'm excited for this book, also! :)
ReplyDeleteThe Harry Potter series. (I'm cheating!)
ReplyDeleteWhat book could I not live without? My first answer would be the Bible, but I also honestly can't imagine living without any books! :) A world without books? That would be so horrible!
ReplyDeleteI definitely couldn't live without books! Ella Enchanted, Jane Eyre, A Court of Mist and Fury, Hamlet, and Anna and the French Kiss are a few of my favorite books to reread, so I'd really miss them.
ReplyDeleteSo many that I completely blanked out. What was your question again? Just kidding. ^_^
ReplyDeleteDefinitely any book of the Harry Potter series--that's expected. Hmmm... Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys. Rebel Queen by Michelle Moran. And I'm starting to feel that way about The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi, but I'm still reading it. So it's a little early to say for sure. Liking it so far.
I definitely could not live without the SHATTER ME trilogy! I love it SO much!
ReplyDeleteEver since I was little I have loved reading, so a world without books would've meant a sad and boring childhood for me. Now that I'm all grown up, I teach first grade. How can I teach first graders to read and to love reading without books? A world without books is not one that I would want to live in!
