Rita Lucero came to New Orleans for one reason and one reason only - to get her husband to sign the divorce papers. He's been ducking her calls and the previous copies of the papers. Now, Rita means business. She needs to get on with her life. She arrives at his cake shop - Zydeco Cakes to wait for him. While she's there, she stumbles across the body of her husband. She discovers several old friends working for her late husband. Rita also discovers he's taken her dream kitchen and created it for his bakery.
Rita's saddened by the death of her husband. She's shocked to learn that since the papers haven't been signed, she could inherit everything. That gives her quite the motive as far as the police are concerned. She's dumbfounded to learn of Philippe's new girlfriend. It seems that he was quite serious about her. Rita feels there's something off about her...
With Philippe's mother asking her to stay and help keep the business afloat from a saboteur, Rita feels she has no choice in the matter. She looks into Philippe's death and into the business where she finds some very questionable dealings.
My Thoughts: A wonderful debut! I loved the heat of the south, the dynamics of the bakery, and the strength of Rita. I loved reading about the cakes - the designing, the tricks, and the construction. It makes me want to learn how to decorate cakes - or at least go bake one. It's a sweet, entertaining read that leaves me anxious for book two.
